Paraglider flying over the Cronan Ranch, Pilot Hill, California.
This week is the week for starting new things. On Monday, I started "Monday Makeover." Today, I am starting something else new and exciting. I am going to post a photo that makes me say "WOW." But, that's not all. I'm going to tell you why I think it qualifies as a WOW photo.
5 reasons why this photo makes me say WOW!
Feeling or emotion - The first thing I get when I look at this photo is a feeling. While I can't actually say I know what it feels like to take off like this guy is doing, I can feel it in the photo.
Composition - I love the composition. The elements in the photo are well balanced and are very pleasing to the eye.
Color - The color really pops in this photo. I did use the Nikon D300 preset for Lightroom, to add a little punch to the color.
Lighting - Even though this photo was taken in April at 1:40 in the afternoon, the lighting works for me. The way the wing is illuminated by the sun really catches my eye.
Timing - The fact that this was shot during take off makes it a really strong image too. These guys don't always get enough lift to get off the ground.
Don't go away just yet. I am also going to recommend that you look at this WOW photo by Kathleen Connally. If you would like to suggest a particular photo to be included in an upcoming Wednesday's WOW post, please send me an email @sherri@sherrimeyer.com.
NOTE: The idea for "Makeover Monday" and "WOW Wednesay" were both inspired by junk email or snail mail I have saved. I knew they would come in handy for something someday!

Codfish Falls Trail" near Weimar. But, when we got down to the river, it was way too crowded for our liking. So, we crossed the bridge and hiked the trail on the other side of the river. Jeff and I had never hiked on this trail before. It was awesome! [click to continue…]
Jeff and I went on a great hike/photo shoot with our friend Peg on Memorial Day Weekend. We were planning to hike the "
Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park.
This shot was taken during our most recent hike at the Cronan Ranch. This guy (I think his name was Randy) was having a great flight and he put on a great show for the camera.
As it turns out, the majority of the group (about 8-10) he was flying with that day were "Baby Boomers." That was really cool, because photographing active Baby Boomers is one of my specialties. I stumbled upon a gold mine, when I found these guys! [click to continue…]

Whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River, near Coloma, California.
Thanks to my friend and fellow photographer, Richard Wong, I have done something I thought I'd never do. I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon! For months, I would read his little Twitter message on his Photo Blog and found it quite amusing at times. But, I really didn't understand anything about it. So, what did I do to satisfy my curiosity? I did like millions of other curious folks are doing and I signed up for my "free" Twitter account. Once I signed up, it was easy to read all of his posts and it cleared up things a bit. But, I still didn't really get the hang of it, so I put it on the back burner for a few more months. Flying A Service Station, Truckee, California.
Do you remember the Flying A Service Station's? If you do, you are giving your age away.
This is the one subject that stood out from the rest, while visiting Truckee recently. It was really fun to photograph. I took a whole series of photos of it and these were two of my favorites.
Close up shot of a gasoline pump at the Flying A.
A closer up view of the pump reveals that premium gas was going for 27 cents per gallon. Imagine that!

Truckee is perhaps one of the most charming and popular mountain towns in California. It is close to Lake Tahoe and offers year-round recreational opportunities.
We stayed in Truckee at the "dog friendly" Inn at Truckee, during our recent road trip. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting the area with your pooch. It is very reasonable, has a spa and hot tub and even includes continental breakfast. It is also close to Old Town, which is one of the areas I was photographing during our stay in Truckee. Our dog, Cocoa, gives it 3 paws out of 4, based on the rating system in the California Dog Lover's Companion Guide Book.
About the photo:
I used my favorite creative filter in PhotoShop CS3 "Poster Edges" to achieve this look.

Man horseback riding on the Long Valley Trail, Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park, Pilot Hill, California.
Horseback riding doesn't get any better than this. These two were out for a Sunday ride, on one of several Cronan Ranch Trails, the Long Valley Trail. The trails here offer spectacular views, access to the American River, wide-open spaces and a whole lot more.

If you are looking for a great place to trailer your horse in the Sierra Foothills, be sure to check out the Cronan Ranch. It offers 12-miles of multi use trails, plenty of parking and it's FREE! You can also ride your horse right down to the South Fork of the American River and have a picnic. I sure wish I had a place like this to ride, when I had my horse!
The Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park is located on the corner of Hwy 49 and Pedro Hill Rd. in Pilot Hill. You can download a copy of the
