Photo #1 - Paragliding in the Sierra Foothills.

Photo #2 - Paragliding in the Sierra Foothills.
Sometimes I have a hard time tossing out a photo just because it’s out of focus. This photo is one of those photos. What I like to do when this happens is to apply my favorite artistic filter in PhotoShop CS3 “Poster Edges.”
Photo # 1 – In Lightroom 2, I set the White Balance to daylight and applied the Nikon D300 preset. Then, in PhotoShop CS3, I turned this out of focus photo into a digital art photo, by applying the “Poster Edges” filter.
Photo #2 – This is the way the NEF looked straight out of the camera.
Does this work for you? I’d love to hear your comments.

Gloriosa Daisy in my yard. In Lightroom, I changed the White Balance to daylight and used the Nikon D300 preset. I also touched up a few hot spots on the petals with the “Recovery Slider.”
As a fairly new and totally hooked Lightroom user, I am always looking for great Lightroom tips. Each week, I keep my eyes wide-open for information I feel is worthy of passing along to other Lightroom users, or those thinking about becoming one. Hopefully, you will find useful information or you will pick up a few new folks to follow.

Photo #1 – A foggy morning along the Deschutes River, Oregon.
Today, I’m starting “Makeover Monday.” Each week, I’m going to select one image from our Lightroom catalog (NEF) and give it a makeover. NEF files straight out of the camera are dull and can always be improved with processing.
I will post both images; the image straight out of the camera and the image with the makeover. Then, I will explain what I did to achieve the results I wanted.
This image was selected for a makeover because, it is one of a series of images we are presently developing, to be uploaded soon to our Baby Boomer gallery.

Photo #2 – A foggy morning along the Deschutes River, Oregon.
Photo #1 – to get the results above, I changed the White Balance to Daylight to warm it up a bit. Then, I applied this wonderful Nikon D300 Preset developed by Christian LøverÃ¥s of Oslo, Norway. We just started using this preset yesterday and we love it! I then used the Adjustment Brush to tone down the over exposed glare on the water.
Photo #2 – this is the NEF the way it looked straight out of the camera.
Which one do you like best?

American River Rocks, near Weimar, California.
This is a close up photo of the large rock Peg was sitting on in this photo. These little rocks were arranged just like this, when I stumbled upon them.
Holes like these are created by the water washing over the large rock into a small hole. When a little rock gets caught inside the small hole, it tumbles for a long time, making the hole bigger. Eventually, more rocks make their way into the hole as they did here.
I could have missed this photo opportunity, if I hadn’t paid attention to the smaller details in my “big picture.”

Peg spotted a rock with a built-in seat.
Jeff and I went on a great hike/photo shoot with our friend Peg on Memorial Day Weekend. We were planning to hike the “Codfish Falls Trail” near Weimar. But, when we got down to the river, it was way too crowded for our liking. So, we crossed the bridge and hiked the trail on the other side of the river. Jeff and I had never hiked on this trail before. It was awesome! [click to continue…]

Paraglider getting a bird's eye view of the Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park, Pilot Hill, California.
If you are looking for a great place to have a paragliding adventure, check out the Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park.
This shot was taken during our most recent hike at the Cronan Ranch. This guy (I think his name was Randy) was having a great flight and he put on a great show for the camera.
As it turns out, the majority of the group (about 8-10) he was flying with that day were “Baby Boomers.” That was really cool, because photographing active Baby Boomers is one of my specialties. I stumbled upon a gold mine, when I found these guys! [click to continue…]

Whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River, near Coloma, California.
Thanks to my friend and fellow photographer, Richard Wong, I have done something I thought I’d never do. I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon! For months, I would read his little Twitter message on his Photo Blog and found it quite amusing at times. But, I really didn’t understand anything about it. So, what did I do to satisfy my curiosity? I did like millions of other curious folks are doing and I signed up for my “free” Twitter account. Once I signed up, it was easy to read all of his posts and it cleared up things a bit. But, I still didn’t really get the hang of it, so I put it on the back burner for a few more months. Flying A Service Station, Truckee, California.
Do you remember the Flying A Service Station’s? If you do, you are giving your age away.
This is the one subject that stood out from the rest, while visiting Truckee recently. It was really fun to photograph. I took a whole series of photos of it and these were two of my favorites.

Close up shot of a gasoline pump at the Flying A.
A closer up view of the pump reveals that premium gas was going for 27 cents per gallon. Imagine that!
