Wednesday’s WOW: American River Rock Art
American River Rock Art, otherwise known as "Cairn," Confluence of the American River, Auburn, California.
This image of the stack of rocks was taken on Monday, during our "Dine & Dip" down at the American River.
To escape from the heat after several days in a row of triple digit temps, we decided to take our dinner to the river. Following dinner was a very refreshing and welcomed dip in the crystal clear North Fork of the American River. I think this could become a weekly habit!
Of course, I brought my camera gear along too. I was pretty sure by the time we got down there (about 5:00) the lighting would be changing for the good. I was right.
I had preconceived ideas of what I wanted to photograph once we got down there. I was planning on capturing photos of people enjoying the river, in as many different ways as possible. I was able to get those photos. That was the cake. Then, when I saw this stack of Cairn, it was the frosting on the cake! There were many of them, but this one was sitting in the river in perfect light. I came home with a couple dozen different compositions of this Cairn. This was one of my favorite ones from the shoot.
When I was developing this image in Adobe PhotoShop Lightroom 2, I played around with the white balance a bit. By doing so, I came up with several variations of just this one photo. For this one, I left the white balance set at "as shot."
By the way, the constructing of Cairns has become very popular down there in the last few years. In fact, it seems it has become popular anywhere there are lots of rocks and people lingering in an area for long enough.
I hope you enjoyed this weeks Wednesday's WOW. Next week, I will be away from the office, so I won't be doing a Wednesday's WOW. I will be out enjoying and photographing in the woods (my other office) for a few days. I should come home with lots of new material!
