Icicle

by Sherri on December 18, 2009

Icicle

I found this icicle hanging from the edge of our roof, the day after our recent "Sierra Snowstorm." It was developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.

What fun this was to photograph! The day after our "Big Sierra Snowstorm" last week, this icicle started forming from a pipe on the edge of our roof. Our snow normally melts away as soon as the sun comes out. This storm was a cold one and this icicle hung around for 3-days. That gave me plenty of time to re-shoot it if necessary. That was a real treat! My goal was to capture it back lit with a solid blue background. This was the only composition that worked without getting part of the roof, background foliage or lens flare. I love this image the way it is, but I will eventually make copies of it with some of the blue cropped out. I hope you enjoy viewing this image, as much as I enjoyed creating it! Thank you for visiting! 🙂 Sherri

Vertical or Horizontal?

Goose silhouette, Utica Reservoir, Alpine County, California. When you have a really good subject in front of you like this Goose, it's always a good idea to shoot more than one photo of it. Try shooting your subject in both formats (vertical & horizontal) at the minimum. Here is the horizontal photo of this Goose, that I posted last week. Which one do you prefer? Thank you for visiting. Goose

Silhouette of a Goose at Utica Reservoir, Alpine County, California. This photo was taken soon after we landed at Utica Reservoir, during our recent camping trip. After Jeff and I and our friends Jeff and Kim decided on a campsite, Kim and I wandered down to the lake to scout out photo opportunities. We had to run back to camp to grab our cameras. The conditions couldn't have been any better. The lighting was perfect. A gaggle of Geese flew in to greet us. Beautiful clouds surrounded us. Everything lined up perfectly! We photographed the heck out of those Geese. The photo shown here is one of my favorites from the ones I captured. [click to continue…]
American-River-Rocks-2 "River of Gold," Confluence of the American River, Auburn, California. This is another one of my favorite images, from our photo shoot down at the Confluence of the American River on Monday. I'm keeping this really short. The main reason for this post is to try out "NetworkedBlogs." As soon as I hit the "publish" button on this blog post, it is suppose to post directly to my Facebook page. Let's see if it works! Wednesday’s WOW: American River Rock Art

by Sherri on July 22, 2009

American-River-ArtAmerican River Rock Art, otherwise known as "Cairn," Confluence of the American River, Auburn, California. This image of the stack of rocks was taken on Monday, during our "Dine & Dip" down at the American River. To escape from the heat after several days in a row of triple digit temps, we decided to take our dinner to the river. Following dinner was a very refreshing and welcomed dip in the crystal clear North Fork of the American River. I think this could become a weekly habit! [click to continue…]

Wednesday’s WOW – Ethereal Webs

by Sherri on July 15, 2009

Ethereal-Webs-2Backlit spider webs covered with dew, Auburn, California. One fall morning while on a hike, I found these webs all lit up beautifully with backlighting and covered with dew. Why this photo makes me say WOW!
  1. Backlighting - Backlighting is one of my favorite types of lighting. I think it worked really well here.
  2. Colors - I really love green & blue together. I think the two colors compliment each other well. Our house is even decorated with green & blue.
  3. Uniqueness - It's not every day you get to witness dewey, backlit spider webs. If it hadn't been for the fact that I was trying out my brand new first DSLR (a Nikon D70) and looking for things to photograph, I could have missed this opportunity. The others I was hiking with didn't even notice them!
I hope you keep your eyes wide-open next time you are out and about with your camera. You just never know what you might stumble upon! Thank you for visiting. gloriosa-daisy Gloriosa Daisy in my yard. In Lightroom, I changed the White Balance to daylight and used the Nikon D300 preset. I also touched up a few hot spots on the petals with the "Recovery Slider." As a fairly new and totally hooked Lightroom user, I am always looking for great Lightroom tips. Each week, I keep my eyes wide-open for information I feel is worthy of passing along to other Lightroom users, or those thinking about becoming one. Hopefully, you will find useful information or you will pick up a few new folks to follow. Here are my "Top 10 Lightroom Tweets of the Week" in no particular order. Enjoy! [click to continue…]

Pay Attention to the Small Details

by Sherri on June 3, 2009

american-river-rocks American River Rocks, near Weimar, California. This is a close up photo of the large rock Peg was sitting on in this photo. These little rocks were arranged just like this, when I stumbled upon them. Holes like these are created by the water washing over the large rock into a small hole. When a little rock gets caught inside the small hole, it tumbles for a long time, making the hole bigger. Eventually, more rocks make their way into the hole as they did here. I could have missed this photo opportunity, if I hadn't paid attention to the smaller details in my "big picture." Thank you for visiting. Spring Has Sprung!

by Sherri on March 29, 2009

narcissus31 Narcissus blooming in my yard, Auburn, California. This photo of the Narcissus Plant was taken on the same day this Narcissus photo in my previous post was taken. How I got the shot These Narcissus were shot on a Nikon D300, with an 80-200 zoom lens attached. I choose 3:30 in the afternoon to photograph them, so I could take advantage of my favorite type of lighting, backlighting. The shutter speed, aperture and ISO used were: 1/2000 sec., f 4.0 and ISO 200. For post-processing in Lightroom 2.1, I set the Clarity to -100 to give it a soft look and pushed the Vibrance to +100 to add punch to the color. Coming Next - "How to make multiple exposures with a Nikon D300." Thank you for visiting.
