Pay Attention to the Small Details

by Sherri on June 3, 2009

american-river-rocks American River Rocks, near Weimar, California. This is a close up photo of the large rock Peg was sitting on in this photo. These little rocks were arranged just like this, when I stumbled upon them. Holes like these are created by the water washing over the large rock into a small hole. When a little rock gets caught inside the small hole, it tumbles for a long time, making the hole bigger. Eventually, more rocks make their way into the hole as they did here. I could have missed this photo opportunity, if I hadn't paid attention to the smaller details in my "big picture." Thank you for visiting. Peg spotted a rock with a built-in seat.

Jeff and I went on a great hike/photo shoot with our friend Peg on Memorial Day Weekend. We were planning to hike the "Codfish Falls Trail" near Weimar. But, when we got down to the river, it was way too crowded for our liking. So, we crossed the bridge and hiked the trail on the other side of the river. Jeff and I had never hiked on this trail before. It was awesome! [click to continue…]

Top 10 Photo Related Tweets of the Week

rafting2 Whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River, near Coloma, California. Thanks to my friend and fellow photographer, Richard Wong, I have done something I thought I'd never do. I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon! For months, I would read his little Twitter message on his Photo Blog and found it quite amusing at times. But, I really didn't understand anything about it. So, what did I do to satisfy my curiosity? I did like millions of other curious folks are doing and I signed up for my "free" Twitter account. Once I signed up, it was easy to read all of his posts and it cleared up things a bit. But, I still didn't really get the hang of it, so I put it on the back burner for a few more months. Old Town Truckee, California

Digital Art photo of Old Town Truckee, California.

Truckee is perhaps one of the most charming and popular mountain towns in California. It is close to Lake Tahoe and offers year-round recreational opportunities. We stayed in Truckee at the "dog friendly" Inn at Truckee, during our recent road trip. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting the area with your pooch. It is very reasonable, has a spa and hot tub and even includes continental breakfast. It is also close to Old Town, which is one of the areas I was photographing during our stay in Truckee. Our dog, Cocoa, gives it 3 paws out of 4, based on the rating system in the California Dog Lover's Companion Guide Book. About the photo: I used my favorite creative filter in PhotoShop CS3 "Poster Edges" to achieve this look. Lake Tahoe, Nevada Panorama

by Sherri on May 6, 2009

tahoe-panorama-1 Lake Tahoe, Nevada Panorama. Creating a panorama photograph is something I've wanted to try for a long time. I guess I was waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. Well, that moment finally happened, while we were visiting the Lake Tahoe area a few days ago. Can you figure out what vantage point this was taken from? How many photos do you think were taken and stitched together to create this image? How do you think they were stitched together? I'd love to hear from you. Please leave your answers in the comments section below. I will explain how this Lake Tahoe Panorama was created later on this month, after I receive a few comments. Thank you for visiting. We made sure to overlap each image about 20% and to keep the horizon in approximately the same position in each photo. We decided that the series that Jeff took was the best of the two. How this photo was developed - Using Lightroom 2.0, Jeff selected the 4 images in the order they were taken. Then he right clicked and selected export to PhotoShop as a panorama. Then PhotoShop automatically stitched the 4 images together. Then all Jeff had to do was crop off the ragged edges.
rafting Early season rafters, paddling a smooth section of the South Fork of the American River, near Coloma, California. This photo was taken during my photo shoot this past Sunday, at the Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park. One of the great things about living in Auburn is it's location. We are located in the heart of the California Gold Country and in the midst of one of the best recreational playgrounds in the country. Within minutes, we can be hiking, skiing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, trail running, gold panning, fishing to name just a few. [click to continue…]

Foresthill Bridge in the Snow

by Sherri on February 27, 2009

Foresthill Bridge in the snow, Auburn, California. After photographing the American River from the Foresthill Bridge, I walked around near the parking area to get a photo of the bridge itself. This bridge stands over 700 feet tall, is the tallest bridge in California and the third tallest bridge in the country. As many times as I have driven over it, walked under it and viewed it from many different perspectives, I had never seen it in the snow and had never walked across it until February 13, 2009! North Fork of the American River

by Sherri on February 23, 2009

North Fork of the American River, taken from the Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California. This shot of the North Fork of the American River takes in more of the surrounding area, than the photo I posted last week. I also wanted to include the snow in this one. After all, that was the main reason I went on my photo adventure the day this was taken. Thank you for visiting. American River From a Different Perspective

by Sherri on February 19, 2009

North Fork of the American River, as seen from the Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California.

If this view of the American River doesn't make you want to walk across the Foresthill Bridge, most likely nothing will. You are looking towards one of our favorite lakes in the area, Lake Clementine. This is the section of river just below the dam. In the bottom of the photo on the left you will see a big rock. That is a diving rock at one of the most popular swimming holes in the area, Clark's Hole. We used to lug our chairs and icebox here nearly every weekend in the summer months. [click to continue…]

A Day at the River Wrap-Up

by Sherri on November 30, 2008

Chips & Guacamole anyone? We are back from a great trip to Bakersfield for Thanksgiving. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving too! Before I post any photos from our trip down there, I want to wrap-up my series on "A Day at the River." Chips, guacamole and/or salsa have become very common snacks for many Americans. I can't imagine packing a picnic lunch without them! In my recent interview with photographer Richard Wong, I mentioned "food photography" as something I wanted to do, that I hadn't really tried yet. When our friend Steve started serving up chips and guacamole, I thought I'd give it a try. It's not your typical food shot, but I kind of like it. What do you think?
