Donna & Maya Bussinger rafting on the Middle Fork of the American River, Auburn, California.
Yesterday was awesome! Jeff & I had the great opportunity to raft the Middle Fork of the American River (between Driver's Flat and Mammoth Bar), with our friend Donna and her 4-year old daughter Maya.
This section of the the American River doesn't draw the hoards of tourists from the Bay Area and LA like the South Fork does. There are a few reasons why. For one thing, it is only 7-miles in length. It also consists of only Class I & II rapids. Lastly, not many know about this run, which is why we love it so much. Now, I know after writing this a few more people will know about it. But, hey, if I don't write about it someone else will. It may as well be me!
Woman running with her dogs across the famous "No Hands Bridge" in Auburn, California.
I chose to feature this photo in my "Wednesday's WOW" post for a couple of reasons.
First of all, I really like it and secondly the annual Western States 100 Endurance Run is coming up June 27-28. If you have never heard of this race, it is a 100-mile foot race which starts in Squaw Valley, California and winds up in Auburn, California 100-miles later. The participants of this race will cross No Hands Bridge minutes before reaching the finish line at Placer High School. NOTE: This bridge is in both El Dorado and Placer counties. Snowy red barn, rural Auburn, California.
This photo of the snowy red barn was also taken the day of my photo adventure across the Foresthill Bridge.
Here is another photo of the same red barn, that I took a couple of years ago. I have always had a love and attraction for old barns, in particular red ones.

Foresthill Bridge in the snow, Auburn, California.
After photographing the American River from the Foresthill Bridge, I walked around near the parking area to get a photo of the bridge itself.
This bridge stands over 700 feet tall, is the tallest bridge in California and the third tallest bridge in the country.
As many times as I have driven over it, walked under it and viewed it from many different perspectives, I had never seen it in the snow and had never walked across it until February 13, 2009!

North Fork of the American River, taken from the Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California.
This shot of the North Fork of the American River takes in more of the surrounding area, than the photo I posted last week. I also wanted to include the snow in this one. After all, that was the main reason I went on my photo adventure the day this was taken.

Foresthill Bridge, most likely nothing will.
You are looking towards one of our favorite lakes in the area, Lake Clementine. This is the section of river just below the dam. In the bottom of the photo on the left you will see a big rock. That is a diving rock at one of the most popular swimming holes in the area, Clark's Hole. We used to lug our chairs and icebox here nearly every weekend in the summer months. [click to continue…]
If this view of the American River doesn't make you want to walk across the
When I set out on my photo adventure this past Friday, I had no idea I would be walking across the Foresthill Bridge for the first time in 22 years.
Someday, I was going to walk across this bridge. But, I needed a really good reason first. Although I always wanted to do it, the thought of it gave me the creeps, that is until this past Friday.
China Wall.
One of the most popular searches on this Photo Blog currently is for the snow conditions at China Wall. Since Jeff and I took the day off on Tuesday to cross country ski there, I thought I would give a snow update for those of you looking for information on this location. I am pleased to report that there was about 3 feet of good snow.
China Wall is one of our favorite spots to ski and snowshoe. It is close to where we live in Auburn. We can take our dog, Cocoa. There is no fee. There are no crowds. And there is no traffic getting there, compared to traveling up highway 80. What more can you ask for?
NOTE: There are usually a few very courteous snowmobilers up there. But, if you want to avoid them, the best time to go is mid-week. There is also plenty of area for you to ski on, where they don't go.
For more information on China Wall, please refer to my other posts under the Foresthill Category.
