Icicle
by Sherri on December 18, 2009
I found this icicle hanging from the edge of our roof, the day after our recent "Sierra Snowstorm." It was developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
What fun this was to photograph! The day after our "Big Sierra Snowstorm" last week, this icicle started forming from a pipe on the edge of our roof. Our snow normally melts away as soon as the sun comes out. This storm was a cold one and this icicle hung around for 3-days. That gave me plenty of time to re-shoot it if necessary. That was a real treat!
My goal was to capture it back lit with a solid blue background. This was the only composition that worked without getting part of the roof, background foliage or lens flare. I love this image the way it is, but I will eventually make copies of it with some of the blue cropped out.
I hope you enjoy viewing this image, as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Thank you for visiting!

I love the drop falling off of the smaller one. It makes the image.
Nice job.
Thanks Mark. It sure was a fun and challenging subject to capture!
Sherri, this is great. You even got the drip. I have some icicle pics I haven’t uploaded yet. I’d better get busy and do that. I don’t have a nice background like this, though.
Thank you Carolyn. I actually took a bunch of photos of this scene. I was editing them yesterday – deleted a few and I’m putting a few in another category for instructional purposes. I will also put a few in our Nature Gallery, as well as a Winter Gallery coming soon. 😉
