Wild Sierra Iris
Wild Sierra Iris growing along the Poppy Loop Trail at Hidden Falls Regional Park, in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, Auburn, California
One year ago this past Thursday, Jeff and I spent our 25th anniversary adventuring in Cabo San Lucas. This year we spent it adventuring in our own neck-of-the-woods. Although it wasn't near as wild as our week in Cabo, it was wild of a different nature.
It was wild as in "wildflowers."
We went on our first Sierra Nevada Foothills wildflower hike of the season, at Hidden Falls Regional Park. The park which just opened at the end of 2006 offers several miles of multi-use trails for hiking, running, mountain biking and horseback riding. Leashed dogs are welcome too!
We were very excited to see what appears to be a very good wildflower season here in the foothills. Among the list of flowers we saw were; Wild Iris, California Poppies, Purple Lupine and several other species I couldn't identify.
I think this might very well be the best wildflower season we've had in years. The Auburn area has tons of trails where they should be showing their pretty faces right now, but I highly recommend the trails at Hidden Falls Regional Park for a great April - early May wildflower hike.
I learned something a few years back from a good friend, that has been a lot of help when in search of wildflowers. That is, for every 1,000 feet in elevation you climb, they will be blooming 1 week later. So, if you miss the lower elevation wildflowers, you can still enjoy them well into the summer months, by driving a little further up the hill each week.
Eventually, you might even end up at Lake Tahoe!
Note: The trail that takes you to the spectacular Hidden Falls is temporarily closed off, while a viewing platform is being built. It is scheduled to re-open in the beginning of June.

Certainly a nice way to spend your anniversary. Hopefully I find a meaningful relationship that can last at least that long. But then again I just barely passed 25 a few years ago lol.
Did you get a chance to see if there were any poppies at Yuba? I remembered there being a lot of butterflies there too along the banks.
Thank you Richard. You will meet that special someone when you are not looking for them. Who knows? Maybe while you are out “in the field!”
No, we haven’t made it to the Yuba this year. It might be worth checking out. We have been very task oriented at home lately and haven’t been out and about much. We are working on a rather big project (photo related), that will be revealed soon.
Then, maybe we can spend more time enjoying and photographing what spring has to offer this year.
