Snowshoeing for Photos and Fitness

snowshoe-tour.jpg Cathy Anderson-Meyers leading a snowshoe tour, at the Sierra Club's Clair Tappaan Lodge Now that the new year has rolled around, it's time to shed some of the extra pounds I've been carrying around for the past 3-4 years. The best shape I was ever in was back when we were doing a lot of snowshoeing. It burns up lots of calories and it's a great way to capture great winter photos.  Sometimes Jeff and I would go on a snowshoe tour lead by Cathy Anderson-Meyers. That was a great way to get model released stock photos of snowshoeing.  In order to get photos of all the people in the group, I would literally run back and forth, from front to back and back to front, just like a dog. To top that off, I was usually carrying a photo daypack weighing about 30 lbs. That was an intense workout! Several years back, we traded snowshoeing for cross country skiing. It's been great fun and exercise too, but it's not near as easy (at least for me) to be a serious photographer on skiis as it is on snowshoes. This winter, we are going to dust off our snowshoes and hit the trails. It may even be this weekend, especially since we have about 10 feet of fresh snow in the Sierras!

That looks like a lot of fun Sherri. I wouldn’t want to be stranded out there by myself though in 10 feet worth of snow. How much did it cost to take the snowshoe tour?

So far, we have never been stranded, although that is always a possibility!

What is really fun is to snowshoe or ski into a backcountry hut and stay for the night. We have done that a couple of times.

The snowshoe tours run about $50.00 per person at the present time. Tours are a great way to get introduced to the sport and can be great fun. But, as long as you educate yourself about the sport and follow certain guidelines, you don’t need to go on tours to enjoy the sport of snowshoeing.

It sounds quite exhausting, if you ask me!!!

Happy 2008 and good luck with your business!

Hi Melli,

Good to hear from you all the way from Germany!

Snowshoeing can be exhausting, but it’s worth it! Have you ever gone snowshoeing or cross country skiing before? Do you get much snow in your area?

I hope you have a prosperous year too!
