Deer – rural Auburn, CA
Photo - Digital art photo created from an out-of-focus original photograph
I'm not a wildlife photographer per se, but when an opportunity presents itself like it did here, I'd be a fool not to try to capture it.
Our dog, Cocoa, started barking, so I looked out the french door to see what type of critter was out front. It could have been a deer, or several deer. My husband and I also have coyotes that come on our property. Once in awhile we see a fox. And since Auburn is a bird sanctuary, wild turkeys are everywhere. We have had as many as 20 or so in our yard at once. Mountain lions and bears are also in the area, although we haven't personally had any in our yard - not yet anyway! And that is just a partial list of critters that come on our property.
Anyway, there were two deer directly out from our house. I ran and got my camera, put the long lens on and "grabbed" a few shots before they took off. Unfortunately, the best of my photos were out of focus. I was in such a hurry, that I focused on the bushes instead of the deer.
While editing images the other day, I decided to see if there was any way I could get a decent photo from this series, by doing a little experimenting in PhotoShop. The photo above is what I got.
Photo Tip - Don't throw away photos that would be great if only they were in focus or??? Experiment with different creative techniques first! More photo tips can be found here.Â

This could do very well as a fine art print. Very painterly. Must be interesting to have wildlife in your backyard. Bears tend to like swimming pools.
Thanks Richard. It’s awesome to have wildlife in the front yard, but there are negative things to it too! For instance, the deer eat your plants and the coyotes kill your cats and become pests.
yeah I have to keep my dog in the house when the prairie falcons are outside in the backyard. There were four of them earlier this year. Don’t think a 12 lb female Jack Russell Terrier would fare too well against them even in a friendly encounter.
Beautiful work Sherri! Also great advise…I never throw away bad images, they can almost always be turned into a wonderful piece of art!
Thank you for your comment DL!
I almost got a shot of a coyote this morning. If I didn’t have to mess with putting the long lens on my camera, I would have shot it! I think I will make sure at the end of each day, that I have it on. I can just about expect to see a deer or a coyote in the front yard, first thing in the morning daily, at least for now.
