Purple Daylily

Purple Daylily on my deck, Auburn, California

For this one, I decided to use one of PhotoShop’s creative filters, Poster Edges to give this shot a more artsy look. I also wanted it to look like it had been rained on, so I added the water drops.

Some of my nature photographer friends won’t like it, because it’s not a true nature photo. But, that’s okay. You can’t please everyone.

I don’t know the actual name of this Daylily either. When I bought it from the gal at the Auburn Garden Club plant sale, it had the name written on the pot. But, when I transplanted it, the name got away from me.

If anyone knows the name of this one, please let me know by leaving a comment. Thank you!

Orange Daylily

Orange Daylily on my deck, Auburn, California

Right now, I seem to have become obsessed with my Daylilies. They are really putting on a great show this year. This is the first season I have actually photographed them.

I don’t know what the actual name for this Daylily is. Perhaps someone with more experience than me can post the name of it in the comments section. That would be great!

My Daylilies will be blooming for awhile longer and I will be posting more photos of them. Be sure to check back soon!

Yellow Daylily

Yellow Daylily (Hemerocallis) on my deck, Auburn, California

Daylilies are very hard to photograph, because they only bloom for a day. When I first started growing them a few years ago, I didn’t realize this. I should have known by the name. I hate to admit it, but it wasn’t until I had my first bloom that I figured it out! [click to continue…]

The Blue Thunder story continues…

It’s been 25 years since this photo was taken on our off-road adventure trip to Utica Reservoir. But, I remember it as if it was yesterday.

California Poppies and Purple Lupine, Hidden Falls Regional Park, Auburn, California

I love the contrast between the orange Poppies and the purple Lupine so much, I am posting another version of the photo I posted yesterday.

Windy Point Trail 2008 wildflower update

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the Windy Point Trail. Jeff and I have not been there yet this year. But, a couple of our friends were there a couple of weeks ago and reported that the California Poppies, Lupine and Goldfields were putting on a great show.

I’m not sure how much longer they will last, but most likely for a couple more weeks or so. If you can’t make it up there this year, be sure to put it on your list for next year!

California Poppies and Purple Lupine, Hidden Falls Regional Park, Auburn, California

The hillside near the Hidden Falls Regional Park parking lot is covered with these colorful California Poppies and Purple Lupine.

If you are short on time, or disabled and unable to take a wildflower hike here, you can still get an eyefull of color without getting out of your car.

Please refer to my last post for more information about the park.

Enjoy!

Wild Sierra Iris

Wild Sierra Iris growing along the Poppy Loop Trail at Hidden Falls Regional Park, in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, Auburn, California

One year ago this past Thursday, Jeff and I spent our 25th anniversary adventuring in Cabo San Lucas. This year we spent it adventuring in our own neck-of-the-woods. Although it wasn’t near as wild as our week in Cabo, it was wild of a different nature.

It was wild as in “wildflowers.”

Mallard Ducks at the American River Parkway, Sacramento, CA

Last weekend, Jeff and I did a photo shoot at the American River Parkway in Sacramento. Our assignment was to capture photos of bikers on the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, named the #1 bike path in the nation for 2006 by www.trails.com.

While we were scouting the area for great locations, I got a little sidetracked by these beautiful Mallards.

I love experimenting in PhotoShop. At first, I preferred the original shot. After looking at them for awhile, I have changed my mind. Now, I like the digital art version the best.

Which one do you prefer?

One of the most spectacular locations to enjoy and photograph wildflowers in the Sierra Foothills is without a doubt the Windy Point Trail.  [click to continue…]

Pond and Reflections

Pond and reflections, rural Auburn, California

There are a lot of ponds in the Auburn area, but this is one of my favorites.

Many common species of birds seem to claim it as one of their favorites as well. But, every year in the spring, the pond also gets visited by a not so common bird, the Green Heron. It is a beauty of a bird that lives in this pond for weeks at a time, before moving on.
