A Day at the River #2

by Sherri on November 21, 2008

Ripples on the American River, Weimar, California

This shot was taken at about 4:30 in the afternoon. The light was starting to get really good down in the American River Canyon. I was open to photographing anything that caught my eye that day.

I looked down at the crystal clear water and saw these beautiful ripples with blue streaks running through them. That was a photo opportunity I couldn’t pass up!

Leaf Peeping in Plumas County

Fall color on the Little Truckee River, Truckee, California.

Sometimes the best laid plans don’t pan out. That was the experience Jeff & I just had, during our fall colors trip to Plumas County last week.

If you’ve been following this Photo Blog for awhile, you have been reading about our recent Northeastern California Road Trip we took back in August. In fact, I’m still writing about it.

We fell in love with Plumas County and decided to return in October for an “Awesome Autumn” tour, which this area is known for. Unfortunately, we arrived a little too early. I did my homework. I followed the Awesome Autumn Leaf Peeper Blog for Plumas County. It was recommended to wait a week or so for “peak color,” but that wasn’t something we could do. We went anyway, but it was a huge disappointment. I really expected to see more intense color like we witnessed in Mono County on previous trips. But, that just wasn’t going to happen on this trip. As it turns out, the best color we saw during our nearly 400-mile trip was on the Little Truckee River in Sierra County (see photo above).

For anyone looking for a great “dog friendly” place to stay in Plumas County while you check out the fall colors, we highly recommend the Sierra Sky Lodge. That was the highlight of our trip!

Since the highlight of our trip was our stay at Sierra Sky Lodge, I decided to include several photos I took during our 1 night stay there.

The Sierra Sky Lodge as seen if you are coming from Quincy.

The research I did to locate this place really paid off. The owners and staff of the Sierra Sky Lodge are really friendly and helpful and the rates are very reasonable.

Cabin #1, our “dog friendly” cabin for the night.

The cabin we stayed in was cozy and rustic, just like we like them. It had a fireplace and the most comfortable bed we’ve slept in for a long time. This place actually reminded us of home. That is something we look for, when we’re not camping.

The next time we visit Plumas County and we are not camping, we will definitely return to Sierra Sky Lodge!

By the way, our dog Cocoa rates this place four out of four paws on the Paws Scale. If you don’t know about the Paws Scale, check out the California Dog Lover’s Companion Guidebook by Maria Goodavage.

Happy Leaf Peeping!

Indian Creek, Taylorsville, California

Indian Creek, Taylorsville, California

Our first 3 nights were spent in Taylorsville, a little “Po Dunk” town in Plumas County, southeast of Lake Almanor.

We camped on 10 acres of private property with our friends, along beautiful Indian Creek. The photo above was taken right next to our campsite.

While we were there, we did a day trip to Lasen National Park. Now, we have moved on to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

We hope to write again in a few days, but we have found out that Blogging while on the road is harder than we thought.

Adios,

Jeff & Sherri (Cocoa too!)

Duck Island

Lone duck at Ashford Park, Auburn, California

Every time Jeff, Cocoa (our dog) and I go to the Ashley Memorial Dog Park, we can’t help but notice the lone resident duck, at nearby Ashford Park.

When he is not being fed by visitors of the park, you can usually find him on his own private island.

Daylily Finale

by Sherri on July 11, 2008

My favorite Daylily without using “Poster Edges”

Apparently, Daylilies are very hearty plants. They have managed to survive and thrive in the horrible smoky conditions we have been having for the past 18 days.

For my Daylily finale, I decided to show what this photo looks like before applying my favorite creative filter “Poster Edges,” then showing what the same photo looks like after I apply the filter. This is also the same Daylily plant I featured a few days ago.

After applying “Poster Edges”

You can see that the filter darkens the background and gives it a totally different look.

I hope you have enjoyed my Daylily series. Feel free to comment on which one of these two versions you like best.

Have a great weekend!

Cream of the Crop

My favorite Daylily, Auburn, California

As with all of the other Daylily photos I have posted, I don’t know the actual name of this one either. But, I can tell you that it is my favorite. It will also be the last one to bloom.

I may post a couple more variations of this one in the next few days, since it is my favorite.

Please check back later. Also, if you happen to know the name of it, please let my other readers and I know, by leaving a comment below. Thanks.

Before & After

by Sherri on June 30, 2008

Lone Oak Tree #1, Auburn, California

There is an excellent write-up on Black Star Rising, that gave me the idea for this post.

Often, some of our images don’t make the cut for one reason or another, but we hang on to them anyway.

That was the case with this shot. It was taken years ago with a little 3.0 MP digicam that was given to me. In fact, I took quite a few shots on this camera that I really love, but can’t do much with.

The write-up on Black Star Rising got me to go back and take another look at some of my really old stuff once again.

For years, I wanted a photo of this tree. It stands out like a sore thumb on Foresthill Road, just outside of Auburn. Unfortunately, when I did finally get a shot of it, it was with the wrong camera.

Lone Oak Tree #2, used Poster Edges Filter and increased the saturation.

I decided to play around with this shot in PhotoShop to see what I could come up with. Since the quality of the original isn’t good enough to use for large prints, or most publication purposes, I decided to use my favorite creative filter, Poster Edges, to give it the look of a painting. By doing so, I may be able to at least make a decent print of it. I really like the way it turned out. I have done this with other shots that almost got tossed, such as this one of the deer.

Photo Tip – don’t throw a photo away just because it doesn’t make the final cut. If it has some redeaming quality about it, try a little experimentation.

By the way, I will return to this old Lone Oak Tree in the future with my professional camera. I know that it’s days are numbered and I want to capture a great shot of it before it’s too late!

Purple Daylily 2

Purple Daylily on my deck #2

Believe it or not, this is the same Daylily plant I featured in my last post.

Which one do you prefer?
