Sunrise at Utica Reservoir

Utica-Reservoir-2

Sunrise at Utica Reservoir, Alpine County, California.

This photo was taken the first morning during our camping trip to Utica Reservoir. Typically, I like to include people in my photographs, but I had to bag that idea for this photo. I was the only one up!

More photos of our adventure to this magical place to come!

Lake Tahoe, Nevada Panorama

by Sherri on May 6, 2009

tahoe-panorama-1
Lake Tahoe, Nevada Panorama.

Creating a panorama photograph is something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. I guess I was waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. Well, that moment finally happened, while we were visiting the Lake Tahoe area a few days ago.

Can you figure out what vantage point this was taken from? How many photos do you think were taken and stitched together to create this image? How do you think they were stitched together?

I’d love to hear from you. Please leave your answers in the comments section below. I will explain how this Lake Tahoe Panorama was created later on this month, after I receive a few comments.

Panorama Photo Update:

How this photo was created – To create this panorama, Jeff & I each took a series of 4 images. We made sure to overlap each image about 20% and to keep the horizon in approximately the same position in each photo. We decided that the series that Jeff took was the best of the two.

How this photo was developed – Using Lightroom 2.0, Jeff selected the 4 images in the order they were taken. Then he right clicked and selected export to PhotoShop as a panorama. Then PhotoShop automatically stitched the 4 images together. Then all Jeff had to do was crop off the ragged edges.

McArthur-Burney Falls Favorite

by Sherri on April 6, 2009

McArthur-Burney Falls, Northeastern, California.

This photo of the famous McArthur-Burney Falls was taken last summer, during our Northeastern California Road Trip.

I didn’t really like the way it looked straight out of the camera at all. It was actually one of the photos that almost got dumped during the editing process. Then, the other day, I started experimenting in Adobe PhotoShop Lightroom 2.1 to see what I could come up with.

Now, it is actually one of my favorites from the series of photos I took of the falls. You can see a few more photos of McArthur-Burney Falls in my Shasta County category.

Can you figure out what I did to make this photo look like a painting? I will post the answer in a few days. Thank you for your participation!

Update: Thank all of you who commented on this photo of McArthur-Burney Falls. I am not going to make you wait any longer to tell you what I did to get it to look like a painting.

First of all, the original photo was way too underexposed. I really didn’t think I would be able to do anything with it, but I was wrong! I started experimenting using Lightroom 2.1, until I either got something I liked, or it was going into the trash bin.

Settings I used in Lightroom

Set Blacks to 0

Set Recovery to 100

Set Fill to 80

Set Clarity to +100

Set Vibrance to +55

North Fork of the American River

by Sherri on February 23, 2009

North Fork of the American River, taken from the Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California.

This shot of the North Fork of the American River takes in more of the surrounding area, than the photo I posted last week. I also wanted to include the snow in this one. After all, that was the main reason I went on my photo adventure the day this was taken.

American River From a Different Perspective

by Sherri on February 19, 2009

North Fork of the American River, as seen from the Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California.

If this view of the American River doesn’t make you want to walk across the Foresthill Bridge, most likely nothing will.

You are looking towards one of our favorite lakes in the area, Lake Clementine. This is the section of river just below the dam. In the bottom of the photo on the left you will see a big rock. That is a diving rock at one of the most popular swimming holes in the area, Clark’s Hole. We used to lug our chairs and icebox here nearly every weekend in the summer months. [click to continue…]

Above the Fog?

A foggy morning in Auburn, California #1.

One of the really neat things about living in Auburn is that it is “Above the fog and below the snow.” [click to continue…]

Lake Tahoe, California

by Sherri on November 10, 2008

Fallen Leaf Lake (foreground) and Lake Tahoe, California, taken from the Mount Tallac Trail.

After leaving Blue Lake, we drove south on 395 and headed for Fallen Leaf  Campground, in South Lake Tahoe.

Some of our friends joined us there for the last leg of our road trip. While we were there, we hiked the spectacular Mount Tallac Trail.

This photo was taken during our hike. There are so many photos of Lake Tahoe that all look pretty much the same. I wanted to capture a more unique shot of this very popular subject.

Here is another post I wrote about our visit to Lake Tahoe.

Blue Lake Sunset 2

by Sherri on November 4, 2008

Blue Lake Sunset, Modoc National Forest, Northeastern California

You never know if and when you will get to return to a place that you have visited. So, if you are passionate about the subject, be sure to take lot’s of photos of it while you are there.

I did return to Blue Lake in California’s Modoc National Forest, but it took me 42 years. Fortunately, there was this spectacular sunset for me to shoot the heck out of.

If I have my way, it won’t be 42 years before my next visit to this Northeastern California jewel!

Blue Lake Sunset

by Sherri on October 31, 2008

Blue Lake sunset, Modoc National Forest, Northeastern California

We packed up our camp at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park and headed for one of my favorite childhood camping spots, Blue Lake. Here is the post I wrote during our road trip.

The first night we were there, we were rewarded with this beautiful sunset. It helped to take our minds off of what we had witnessed driving in a few hours earlier that day; the devastation from the forest fire which had occured 7 years ago.

Solitude at Ahjumawi

by Sherri on October 27, 2008

Horr Pond Camp, Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, California.

If you are looking for solitude, look no further. This park gets less than 2,000 visitors annually.

Just be sure to BYOB! No, I’m not talking about booze. BYOB stands for “bring your own boat.” That is the only way you will get to experience Ahjumawi.

I’d like to see this photo used on the cover of a Northern California kayaking or camping guidebook.

Note: Be sure to read my other posts on Ahjumawi. I’ve still got a couple more coming too!
