This past Sunday, I went on a wonderful day trip with my husband, Jeff and our dog, Cocoa. First on our list was to hike the beautiful 5-mile “Dog Friendly” Sagehen Creek Trail. It starts on highway 89, just a few miles out of Truckee and ends up at Stampede Reservoir.

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is of people interacting with their dogs. We had been on this trail before, so I knew there would be people hiking with their dogs. But, I didn’t expect to meet Kris and her 4 extremely “well behaved” and “photogenic” dogs! She was hiking the trail with her 3 Golden Retreivers and 1 Irish Setter, which she adopted  through Nor Cal. We thought we had our hands full with just one dog!

I will post more photos from our day trip to Sierra County soon.

We are back home now after 4 wonderful days of camping at Lake Faucherie. Actually, we camped below the lake at Canyon Creek Campground. The lake itself has a couple of group camp sites that get reserved as soon as they become available, unless you camp during the week only.

We are now playing catch up in the office, editing the images from our trip to Faucherie and uploading the remaining Cabo San Lucas Stock Photos to our Website. While going through the images from our camping trip, I came across this image of our dog, Cocoa, also known as “Little Brown Bear.” Can you figure out why? That’s right, because she looks like a bear! She looks so much like a bear, that several times while out hiking, we have had people yell “theres a bear over there!” And when we go hiking during hunting season, we even put an orange bandana around her neck so she won’t get shot. No, not as in photographs, but shot as in hunted.

I thought since so many of you nature photographers out there shoot (photograph) bears, you might enjoy this photo.  I will be posting more photos from this trip soon.

Eventually, Cocoa will have her own pages on this blog. Some of what she will post will be her favorite places to hike, kayak, canoe, camp, snowshoe, cross country ski, as well as her favorite back road drives right in her own backyard – California’s Gold Country and Sierra Region.

Last week we added a few new Kayaking Stock Photos to our kayaking gallery. The photo above is one of them. My husband and our dog are kayaking on “Dog Friendly” Lake Faucherie, a beautiful, serene lake in the Sierras.

Most people we talk to can’t believe that we can actually fit our 80 lb. Aussie/Chocolate Lab dog in our boat with us, much less paddle. It’s not easy, but it can be done as you can see here in this photo. I took a series of the two of them and this is one of my favorites.

This photo is available for purchase in our Kayaking Stock Photo Gallery.

A few weeks back, I posted a photo tip titled “Shoot it before it’s too late!” Since that post, I have been following my own advice and making it a priority to shoot the subjects I’ve wanted to shoot for a long time, but have taken for granted and assumed they would always be around. I have also been shooting subjects that I know will never be the same again, such as the baby goat in the photo below. He is growing daily!

The photos above “The Old and the Young” both taken in my neighborhood, are examples of recent subjects I have captured before it’s too late!

Life is a little out-of-balance!

I was looking through my photos for an image that would illustrate balance. I came upon this one of my dog and I walking accross a log in a rural pond near Auburn, CA .

That wasn’t an easy task, nor is trying to balance my life right now. I, like most people have to juggle many things and it seems things get out of balance so easily. If I spend too much time on business, then the house falls apart. If I spend too much time on the house, the business falls apart. If I spend too much time on the business and the house, the yard falls apart and the list goes on. You get the picture right?

That’s why I haven’t been blogging for a few days. I was spending way too much time on the computer and not near enough in other areas of my life.  After spending a few days catching up on yardwork, housework, visiting with family and friends, I’m now back to blogging!

If anyone has a recipe for balancing your life, I’d love to hear from you! You do not need to register or login to comment on this blog.

Photo of the Week

This photo of the week is one of our most popular images. This image is available for rights-managed licensing, or it can be purchased as a print. You can view this image in our Auburn Gallery.

For more information on ordering, visit our Ordering Info page.

If there is anything you  have always wanted to photograph, do it before it’s too late!

Some of the oldest buildings in Old Town Auburn, California (USA), caught fire before I ever got them photographed. I guess I just assumed they would always be there and I could photograph them anytime. The Shanghai Bar also located in Old Town Auburn didn’t burn down, but it closed before I could get a good shot of it. The neighbor sold her beautiful Paint horse before I got a good shot of her.

Now, I make a list of the important things in our area that I want to photograph and photograph them sooner rather than later.  You can’t assume they will always be around.

This morning, I couldn’t log on to my computer first thing as I usually do. A storm blew in yesterday and dumped 3-4 inches of snow covering our Sattelite Dish. I took the opportunity to go out and photograph our neighborhood, since it’s rare for us to have snow, or at least enough to stick. And who knows when it will happen again? It also gave me something to write about.

Next time you think of something you really want to photograph, do it sooner rather than later, because later may never happen!

I Couldn’t Resist…

Just when I think I’ve seen all the ways in which people spoil their dogs, I run (no pun intended) into this.

I was out on a run one morning with 2 friends, 2 dogs and a baby in a stroller. As we got closer to a person who was also pushing a stroller I said to my friend with the baby, “Look, there is another baby in a stroller!” As we approached this person, we notice that the baby was not a baby, but a dog – a very happy dog!

Now, that is what I call spoiled! I couldn’t resist taking this photo.

The Color RED – Don’t Leave Home Without It!

There are lots of ways to add impact to your photographs, but this one simple tip can often be your “saving grace.”

Adding a splash of red, can turn an ordinary photograph into an attention grabbing, high-impact photograph. The next time you head out for a photo shoot, bring along something red such as a bandana, daypack, or hat. If you are traveling with someone that you plan on photographing, get them to wear one of the items you brought with you. If you ask ahead of time, maybe they would even be willing to wear a red shirt or jacket.

After several years of photographing my husband and a few of our friends, I’ve finally got them trained to wear red. I’m not the best sport when it comes to wearing red myself, so when it’s my turn to be the subject, I strap on my red photo fanny pack, which I bought specifically for this purpose.

Here is an assignment for you. Next time you are out photographing, take a few photos including something red, then take the same photos without. You will be amazed at the difference.
