Photo – Our friend, Peg, skiing with our dog, Cocoa, along the ridge off of highway 20, Nevada County, CA
Jeff and IÂ are looking forward to another great Cross Country Ski season this year. Hopefully, we will get out more than we did last year, which was only once. But, the previous year, we managed to ski a dozen times. Wow – that sounds a little out-of-balance to me!

Our camp at Buckeye Campground.
We made base camp at beautiful Buckeye Campground, located along Buckeye Creek in the Toiyabe National Forest. That put us in close proximity to the things we wanted to do and places we wanted to explore.
This turned out to be another one of our favorite camping spots. The camp sites were huge and only a couple of them were occupied when we were there. The fall color was intense, as you can see in this photo. And there were several great hiking trails nearby to choose from. NOTE: There is a fee to camp at Buckeye. There are also free campsites nearby.

Photo – Sherri and Cocoa take time out from their run -Â La Pine State Park Campground
We couldn’t get enough of this spot! Each morning during our 4-day stay, we would end up here. It was one of the only spots along the river we could access safely. Even so, we had to keep a tight handhold on the dog, as the river was deep right at the edge and moving fairly fast. She did fall in once and we barely got her out!

This 3.5-mile loop trail runs around the entire La Pine State Park Campground and is great for running, hiking and mountain biking.

Photo – Jeff and Cocoa hiking the Aspen lined Sagehen Creek Trail, near Truckee, CA
We didn’t quite make it to the end of the trail. We spent too much time photographing in this one beautiful meadow and we had plans to meet our friends later on in Sierraville. A couple of hikers that passed by, highly recommended that we keep going, as the Salmon were spawning near where Sagehen Creek and Stampede Reservoir meet. That was only about another half-mile further. I guess we will have to return, as we were also a couple weeks early for peak fall colors!

Cocoa gets one more chance to catch a fish on our return hike. One of her favorite things to do when we are near water is to fish. If we are staying in one place for several hours, she will spend most of the time along the shoreline fishing for minnows. She is so easily entertained!

I was also hoping to photograph someone running with their dog/s on this trail during our hike last Sunday. That didn’t “pan out.” So, it was my turn to be the model for these shots. The Sagehen Creek Trail is a perfect running trail, as well as a hiking trail. It follows Sagehen Creek, winds through Aspen groves and pines and eventually ends up at Stampede Reservoir.
And best of all, it is a “dog friendly” trail!

Our dog, Cocoa, decided to round out the color mix a bit for this shot. Kris has to be getting low on treats by now!

I love the way they all line up by color! I’ve always heard dogs were color blind, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe they lined up by breed rather than by color.

Lucky dogs! Need I say any more?
