Capturing a subject in many different ways can be done all in one photo shoot, or over time. It's always a good idea when you have a great subject in front of you to really explore it and shoot it as many ways as possible. You may never get to return and re-shoot it later!
The Historic Auburn Courthouse pictured above is a subject I have access to 24/7/365 and I have shot it many different ways. If you have a good subject close to home, I recommend practicing these tips on it first, before taking that once in a lifetime dream vacation.
Here are 5 examples of how I have shot the Auburn Courthouse:
Different Seasons - In order to shoot your subject in different seasons, obviously you need to be able to return to the location. I have shot the Auburn Courthouse in both Spring (see photo above) and Winter. Here is a

At night - Shooting at night can be challenging. I also don't have a lot of night shooting experience, but here is a
night shot of the Auburn Courthouse I did manage to get that I really like.
Different lenses - Experiment using different lenses. The shot above was taken with a 12-24mm wide-angle lens. For this
shot of the Auburn Courthouse, I used a 28-70mm lens.
Shoot Horizontal and Vertical - Many subjects work equally well shot in both formats, others don't. If you are shooting for publication, vertical shots are the desired format for COVERS, while horizontals are often used for CENTER SPREADS. Here is a horizontal

Frame Your Subject - You can frame your subject many different ways. For examples of how you can frame your subject,

Fog hovers over the American River Canyon, Auburn, California. This image was developed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
After 12 days straight of rain, there was a major case of "Cabin Fever" at Der Meyer Haus! Yesterday, the sun finally showed it's pretty face and Jeff, our dog Cocoa and I took a hike. 😉
As we were driving to the Stagecoach Trail, we were rewarded with this scene above. It was a definite cure all for "Cabin Fever!" Fog hovering over the American River like this is very common this time of the year, but it does require a bit of planning to get shots like this of it. If you are not willing to get up and get out early, you will miss the golden opportunity!

This photo of the Foresthill Bridge in Auburn, CA was taken last month, during our Big Sierra Snowstorm. This bridge crosses the American River and connects Auburn to the tiny town of Foresthill.
One of the most popular searches on this Photo Blog is for the Foresthill Bridge (also known as the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge). I can understand why. Not only is it the tallest bridge in California, but it's the 3rd tallest bridge of it's kind in the United States.
This bridge was featured in the movie XXX and has become quite the base jumping spot. To see more of our images of this famous bridge, visit our

Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, Old Town Auburn, California. This image was taken last month, during a low snowfall. I used a combination of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & Adobe Photoshop CS3 to develop it.
During last month's low snowfall, I was able to capture this photo of one of Auburn's popular icons in the snow. This was only the second time I have had this rare opportunity.

photo of the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department I captured, during the low snowfall in March of 2006.

Chinese Coolie Statue, Downtown Auburn, California. This image was also taken during our rare, low snowfall last month and developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
Auburn is awesome. It is not only beautiful, but it is full of history and things to see and do. In my last post, I featured a
photo of a statue of Gold Miner, Claude Chana, created by local dentist Ken Fox.
The statue of the
Chinese Coolie above was also created by Ken in 1972. The Coolie is 33 feet long, 22 feet tall and weighs 70 tons. You can view this statue at the old train station site and Chamber of Commerce. Directions: Auburn Chamber of Commerce, east of I-80 on Lincoln Way between Hwy 49 and Harrison Avenue.

Statue of a Gold Miner with the Historic Auburn Courthouse in the background, Old Town Auburn, California. This image was captured last month, during a low snowfall and was developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
You may have seen this statue of a Gold Rush era miner, as you were traveling past Old Town Auburn on I 80. This statue is a representation of
Claude Chana, the prospector who discovered gold here in the Sierra Foothill's in 1848. This is just one of several statues in Auburn, created by Auburn dentist Ken Fox.

The Historic Auburn Courthouse & Museum in Old Town Auburn, California. This photo was captured last month, during a rare low snowfall and developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
Capturing a
photo of the Historic Auburn Courthouse & Museum in the snow is a rare opportunity. In fact, this was only the second time I have had the opportunity to capture it in the snow. There was a lot more snow this time and my photos are much better. That said, I've decided to replace the images which are currently in our Auburn Gallery, with new images from the storm last month.
The Auburn Courthouse (which was completed in 1898) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also contains a museum and gift shop, which are open to the public free of charge.
If you love the
California Gold County,
Auburn, History and Architecture, you owe it to yourself to visit the Historic Auburn Courthouse (Placer County Courthouse), one of Northern California's most beautiful buildings.
