Taylorsville Barn Makeover

by Sherri on March 21, 2012

Old Barn in Taylorsville, California after the makeover.

As I was looking for something to add to my Northeastern California Album this morning, I came across this photo of a barn I shot in Podunk Taylorsville, California. It was taken at noonish...the worst time of the day for photography in most cases. It had power lines in it, an ugly sky and was very close to getting tossed. Something told me to see if I could make a "keeper" out of it. I made a virtual copy of the original file in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, converted it from color to antique and removed the power lines. From there, I took it into Photoshop CS3 and added the filter "poster edges." The difference is amazing...it went from an "Ugly Duckling" into something that inspires me.

Duck-3

This photo was captured this morning at a pond in our rural Auburn, California neighborhood. It was processed using both Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & CS3.

A few minutes ago I wrote this on my Facebook Fan Page.

Photo adventure this morning = BIG FLOP. Took camera with me on a walk. Planned on shooting Poppies. On the way to the Poppy patch, I came upon an unexpected Egret at the pond. Cool I thought, until I realized I had no memory card. Went home & got memory card. Returned to pond = no Egret. Went to Poppy patch = Poppies not open! 🙁

Well, that wasn't 100% true. As it turns out, I did manage to get a couple photos of this duck that I liked. I decided to put one of them up here to hold me over, until I can get my article on Lightroom finished. It's taking me longer than I thought and it's been way too long since my last post! Stay tuned. My Lightroom post will be done soon and I think it will be worth the wait! 😉 Thank you for your patience! ~Sherri

Amgen Tour of California is Coming to Auburn!

by Sherri on February 17, 2010

Foresthill-Bridge-7

Close up shot of the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge taken this past December. You are looking towards North Auburn. This image was processed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & CS3.

WOW - this is BIG news! The largest cycling event in America, the Amgen Tour of California is coming to Auburn this May. A route through Old Town Auburn, Downtown Auburn and along the Foresthill Bridge (California's tallest bridge) has been decided on, as part of the first leg of the race. This leg starts in the Gold Rush town of Nevada City and ends in Sacramento, our state Capitol. If you will be up in this area for the race, there is a lot to see and do here. For starters, be sure to set aside some time for exploring Nevada City, one of the most charming of all California Gold Rush towns. Then, there is my town of Auburn. There is a lot to see and do here too. For a few ideas on how to spend your time while visiting Auburn, you can refer to my Auburn Category on the sidebar of this Photo Blog, or the Auburn Photos on our Website. Locals, you may even get some ideas of things to do in "your own backyard!" Thank you for visiting. Note: If you have any questions about the Auburn area, please feel free to add them in the comments section below. ~Sherri

West’s Oldest Volunteer Fire Department

Firehouse-4

Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, Old Town Auburn, California. This image was taken last month, during a low snowfall. I used a combination of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & Adobe Photoshop CS3 to develop it.

During last month's low snowfall, I was able to capture this photo of one of Auburn's popular icons in the snow. This was only the second time I have had this rare opportunity. Here is the photo of the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department I captured, during the low snowfall in March of 2006. Thank you for visiting. Cold Tone Horse

by Sherri on December 16, 2009

Horse-3

A cold, lonely horse in a pasture in our rural Auburn, California neighborhood. This photo was captured during the "Big Sierra Snowstorm" last week.

You must be thinking what a silly title for a post. I agree. I had a hard time coming up with one. In fact, I nearly asked for help. Then, I had one of those "ah ha moments" and decided to call it "Cold Tone Horse," because that is the treatment I gave this image when I developed it in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2. The original image lacked something for me and I wanted to do something different. Since this horse appeared to be cold, I decided to add to the cold look by using the Preset "Cold Tone" in Lightroom. I have 2 questions for you:
  1. Can you figure out what other 2 creative techniques I used in Photoshop CS3 to create this image?
  2. Does it work for you?

Top 10 Lightroom Tweets of the Week

by Sherri on December 4, 2009

Bakersfield-2

Residents of Hart Memorial Park along the Kern River, Bakersfield, CA. This image was developed using a combination of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & Adobe PS CS3.

These are some of the birds that the couple in the previous photo were feeding. There were so many of them, they were really hard to photograph. I did manage to get one photo of them (this one) that I like. Normally, I would try to isolate one bird verses shooting a group of them, but that wasn't an option here. So, I zoomed in on the bird in the front (left) and used a shallow depth-of-field to throw the background out of focus. Okay. Let's get on with the main reason for this post - the "Top 10 Lightroom Tweets of the Week." Here they are in random order. NOTE: Please feel free to link this post to your site. Fall Hike Along the American River

by Sherri on November 6, 2009

Sherri-&-Cocoa-3

Sherri & Cocoa hiking along the North Fork of the American River, Auburn, California. This image was developed using both Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & Adobe Photoshop CS3.

It's been a couple of weeks since we took this hike. The color down in the canyon was looking pretty good then. This weekend, we are returning to a different location along the American River for more Fall photos. I'm really looking forward to getting out again. I've been tethered to my computer too long in one stretch. I should have some new Fall nature images up next week for you all to see. Have a great weekend everyone! Thank you for visiting. Foresthill-Bridge-5

The famous Foresthill Bridge, Auburn, California. It was processed using a combination of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop CS3.

What: The famous Foresthill Bridge. Where: North Fork of the American River, Auburn, California. When: A couple of weeks ago. Who: Jeff, our dog Cocoa & I were taking a Fall hike. How: The Foresthill Bridge was reflecting in a mud puddle. I thought that was pretty cool. So I took a series of photos of the mud puddle. This was one of my favorites. Then, in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2, I rotated the photo so it was upside down and now you see the bridge right side up in the mud puddle. Did anyone guess how this image was captured, before I revealed the answer? Thank you for visiting.
