Sierra County Day Trip – Sierraville, CA

This was our final destination for the day. We met our friends Leslie and Mark Alire at their new bar, Sid’s Place, the building in the right of this photo. We were unable to make their grand opening party the night before, so we ventured up to this tiny Gold Country town to visit them the next day after our hike. I guess we missed a great bash, but this way we were able to spend more quality time with them.

If you are looking for new experiences, stop in at Sid’s Place in Sierraville, CA for a cold beer, or a glass of wine and try your luck at a game of pool.

There are also a few eateries in town. I haven’t personally tried any of them, but I hear the Mexican Restaurant is a good pick. If anyone out there can give me feedback on other good places to eat in Sierraville, please leave a comment on this blog and I will add it to my photo essay. One of the things that is so attractive about Sierraville is it’s location. I love wide open spaces and this town certainly fits that description. It is situated  in the middle of a vast valley, mostly consisting of ranchland and surrounded by mountains and National Forest.

Another great thing about Sierraville’s location is it’s close proximity to many great recreational opportunies. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing to name just a few can be enjoyed nearby. And if you enjoy a good soak in a hot spring, check out Sierra Hot Springs, which is just a few minutes away also.

Sierra County Day Trip 6 – hiking on the Sagehen Creek Trail, near Truckee, CA

We didn’t quite make it to the end of the trail. We spent too much time photographing in this one beautiful meadow and we had plans to meet our friends later on in Sierraville. A couple of hikers that passed by, highly recommended that we keep going, as the Salmon were spawning near where Sagehen Creek and Stampede Reservoir meet. That was only about another half-mile further. I guess we will have to return, as we were also a couple weeks early for peak fall colors!

Cocoa gets one more chance to catch a fish on our return hike. One of her favorite things to do when we are near water is to fish. If we are staying in one place for several hours, she will spend most of the time along the shoreline fishing for minnows. She is so easily entertained!

I was also hoping to photograph someone running with their dog/s on this trail during our hike last Sunday. That didn’t “pan out.” So, it was my turn to be the model for these shots. The Sagehen Creek Trail is a perfect running trail, as well as a hiking trail. It follows Sagehen Creek, winds through Aspen groves and pines and eventually ends up at Stampede Reservoir.

And best of all, it is a “dog friendly” trail!

I love the way they all line up by color! I’ve always heard dogs were color blind, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe they lined up by breed rather than by color.

This past Sunday, I went on a wonderful day trip with my husband, Jeff and our dog, Cocoa. First on our list was to hike the beautiful 5-mile “Dog Friendly” Sagehen Creek Trail. It starts on highway 89, just a few miles out of Truckee and ends up at Stampede Reservoir.

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is of people interacting with their dogs. We had been on this trail before, so I knew there would be people hiking with their dogs. But, I didn’t expect to meet Kris and her 4 extremely “well behaved” and “photogenic” dogs! She was hiking the trail with her 3 Golden Retreivers and 1 Irish Setter, which she adopted  through Nor Cal. We thought we had our hands full with just one dog!

Watching the fog rise from the Deschutes River – La Pine State Park, Oregon

I was able to drag my husband out of his cozy sleeping bag the next morning for this photo. Although I love the photo I posted yesterday, I prefer this one because it tells a story.

This photo was taken during a trip last week to Central Oregon. It was about 6:30 a.m. and a chilly morning. But, I knew if I resisted the temptation to stay in my nice, warm sleeping bag, I probably wouldn’t regret it. I had done a scouting hike the morning before and fog was rising from the river. So, I planned then to return the next day and capture it on film. It had rained during the night and I knew that the fog would probably be even more dramatic than the day before. 

This shot is one of many shots of this scene I took, while on my 3.5-mile hike/run on the loop trail in La Pine State Park that morning. I’m sure glad I made the effort to rise and shine, when I really wanted to sleep in until it got warm.
