Gold Lake Adventure & Fall Photo Tours

Gold-Lake-10

Sunrise on Gold Lake, Sierra County, California.

Have you been following me on Facebook? I seem to be a little more active there lately, than I am on this Blog. If you have, then you would know that Jeff & I just returned from another adventure in Northeastern California.

We 4-wheeled in to the OHV campground at the back side of Gold Lake, one of our favorite off-the-beaten-path locations. Our friend, Jeff, came along too and he had never been 4-wheeling before! I hiked in to the campground with our dog, Cocoa, while spotting for the two Jeff’s. Cocoa thought that was pretty cool!

When we arrived, someone was camped in “our” favorite spot. We were really disappointed at first, but it didn’t take us long to get over it. We found a better spot, one which was always occupied before.

Oh boy, did we luck out. We ended up in a large campsite at the end of the campground. We had room for 5 or 6 tents and our own private beach for the boats! The campground was built with OHV Green Sticker funds and all of the sites had new tables, fire rings and some even had “Bear Boxes.” The outhouse near our camp was a room with a view (no roof). It was great on starlit nights, but not so good when it rained!

During our stay we kayaked, hiked, relaxed, told stories, ate great food, drank great beer and came home with lot’s of new images! 🙂 I’m giving this trip a 10 out of 10! I guess the weather and water could have been a wee bit warmer. But, there are always trade-offs! If the weather was warmer, chances are the sky would have been boring. We would not have had the wonderful light shows we had = less photo opportunities!

Fall Photo Tours & Workshops Coming Soon! I am really excited to announce that I will be leading several half & full day Fall Gold Country Photo Tours & Workshops, scheduled for October & November. Since there will not be much advance notice, they will be offered at a special “2 for 1” price. More information on this coming soon on this Blog, on Facebook and in our October Newsletter!

As always, thanks for visiting and your comments and questions are greatly welcomed and appreciated!

Happy Trails,

More Quad Fun!

by Sherri on December 15, 2008

Jeff having fun on his new Quad, Auburn, California

I was hoping to post a photo of snowfall in Auburn today. But, the temp needs to drop a couple of degrees or so, for the rain to turn into snow. It did snow on and off here yesterday, but not enough to stick. Right now, chain control is only about 5-miles away, so things could change any minute. We also hear that a couple more “low snow” storms are on their way.

Who knows? Maybe we will even be able to use the snowplow that came with Jeff’s Quad to plow our driveway, during this series of storms! That’s not likely, but if that need should ever present itself, we will be prepared.

Off-Road Adventures in Auburn

by Sherri on December 12, 2008

Jeff trail riding his new Quad in rural Auburn, California

You might remember reading a few months ago about us selling “Blue Thunder,” our Toyota Landcruiser after owning it for 25 years. Well, Jeff did better parting with it than I did, because he had another goal in mind. He wanted a Quad.

A couple weeks ago, we took it to an area near where we live for a photo shoot. We had scouted this area out a few times before the timing was right. I wanted to see dust flying behind him, which I wasn’t going to get soon after a rainfall. I also wanted great backlighting and fall colors.

Waiting a couple of weeks until those elements all came together really paid off. We ended up with over a 100 keepers from this shoot. Although I’m not into the sport myself, I will have to say this was one of the most exciting photo shoots I’ve ever done!

Of all the off-road adventures we have taken in Blue Thunder, climbing the hill in this photo left the biggest impact. [click to continue…]

Blue Lake Sunset

Sunset over Blue Lake, Tahoe National Forest, California

Here is another shot of Blue Lake taken from the ridge, overlooking the lake. This version is the way it actually looked when I shot it.

For this version of the photo above, I did a little adjusting in PhotoShop to bring out the blue tones. After all, the name of the lake is “Blue Lake!”

There are several Blue Lakes in California. But, the one in the photo above has been a favorite of ours for many years. In fact, we have kept it a “secret” up until now. I won’t tell exactly how to get there, other than it’s the Blue Lake near Lake Spaulding, in the Tahoe National Forest.

The Blue Thunder story continues…

It’s been 25 years since this photo was taken on our off-road adventure trip to Utica Reservoir. But, I remember it as if it was yesterday.

Utica Trail Off-Road Adventure

Heading towards Utica Reservoir, Alpine County, California

Here is another shot of our Toyota Landcruiser FJ-40, Blue Thunder, doing what it does best – tackling hard to get to places!

As I mentioned in my last post, we will be selling Blue Thunder soon. Before we do, I wanted to post a few photos of our favorite off-road adventures we have enjoyed in it.

To get this shot, I stood up in the back and clinched on to the roll bar with one white knuckled hand, while shooting with the other. What I love about this photo is that it gives the viewer, YOU, the feeling that you are actually there.

More photos of Blue Thunder and some of our favorite locations such as Utica Reservoir, Blue Lake, Gold Lake and maybe even the famous Rubion Trail to come!

Blue Thunder has been a part of our family for 25 years. But, unfortunately, the time has come that we will be finding it a new home soon.
