Sherri Meyer & Cocoa hiking on the Banner Cascade Trail in Nevada City, California.
Our fall color scouting trip to Nevada City last Thursday didn’t yield quite what we were expecting. We went to check on the fall color for my upcoming Photo Tour & Workshop. It was scheduled for yesterday. It’s a good thing I postponed it due to the lack of color, as this area got dumped on yesterday (6.5 inches of rain at our house)!
According to what I had been reading, the trees were starting to turn a couple of weeks ago. We expected it to look like it did in this photo of Downtown Nevada City, which was taken two years ago almost to the day!
The best laid plans don’t always work out. We made the most of the day anyway. We found a great hiking trail, the “Banner Cascade Trail.” It parallels a four and one-half mile segment of the Lower Cascade Canal between Red Dog Road and Gracie Road, near Nevada City. It is level and great for hiking, biking and running. Leashed dogs are welcome too!
We only had enough time to hike two miles and capture a few Outdoor Lifestyle images, before turning around. The four mile hike was time well spent! 🙂
NOTE: There is still time to book my half-day Old Town Auburn Fall Color Photo Tour & Workshop, or my full day American River & Old Town Auburn Fall Color Photo Tour & Workshop. We should have some really great color by then!
Cheers,
Sherri

Close up shot of the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge taken this past December. You are looking towards North Auburn. This image was processed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & CS3.
WOW – this is BIG news! The largest cycling event in America, the Amgen Tour of California is coming to Auburn this May. A route through Old Town Auburn, Downtown Auburn and along the Foresthill Bridge (California’s tallest bridge) has been decided on, as part of the first leg of the race. This leg starts in the Gold Rush town of Nevada City and ends in Sacramento, our state Capitol.
If you will be up in this area for the race, there is a lot to see and do here. For starters, be sure to set aside some time for exploring Nevada City, one of the most charming of all California Gold Rush towns. Then, there is my town of Auburn. There is a lot to see and do here too.
For a few ideas on how to spend your time while visiting Auburn, you can refer to my Auburn Category on the sidebar of this Photo Blog, or the Auburn Photos on our Website. Locals, you may even get some ideas of things to do in “your own backyard!”
Thank you for visiting. Note: If you have any questions about the Auburn area, please feel free to add them in the comments section below.

Photo – “Pumpkin and Petunias” in Nevada City, CA
This fall decoration really caught my eye and I love it for two reasons. It’s simple. It’s also unique. The unique combination of the Pumpkin and the Petunias is quite a contrast. One way to add impact to a photograph, is by including contrasting subjects in the composition. Ă‚Â

Photo #1 – Rock Shop in Nevada City, CA
While wandering around Nevada City in search of fall color, we stumbled upon this little Rock Shop. I found it so interesting and unique, I had to shoot the h**l out of it! When you have a great subject in front of you, it’s always a good idea to shoot multiple frames. It’s far easier than returning to the location later!

Photo #2 – Rock Shop in Nevada City, CA
As I walked around to the other side, beautiful sidelighting was striking it. This turned out to be one of my favorite photo subjects of the day!

It really pays to get off of the main drag and visit some of the side streets. That is where you can often find the more unique subjects, not the ones everyone else shoots!

Old firehouse in downtown Nevada City, California.
It’s not too late to see the fall colors in Nevada City. This shot was taken on Monday of this week. My husband and I got up there just in time to see peak fall color. If you are thinking about visiting there this weekend, I don’t think you will be disappointed. It will probably be spectacular for a few more days.
