Wow. It’s true. The older you get the faster time flies. I can’t believe it’s been two weeks, since I posted my last Top 10 Lightroom Tweets of the Week post!

Last week, Adobe Photoshop announced their Beta version of Lightroom 3. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but a lot of folks have and they have been tweeting about it – A LOT! [click to continue…]

Fall Has Arrived in Our Neighborhood

by Sherri on October 15, 2009

Horse-2

Fall in rural Auburn, California.

This image was captured yesterday, during our first Fall photo shoot of the year.

Jeff, our dog Cocoa and I went on a 3-mile walk in our rural Auburn neighborhood. It had just stopped raining and everything looked fresh and clean. There were photo opportunities everywhere!

First, I spotted the tree, because I was on the hunt for Fall colors.  But, it alone wasn’t enough to create a good photograph. Then, I noticed the horse in the background. I decided to create a unique composition, by focusing on the tree limb and using a large aperture to throw the horse out-of-focus.

Who says you have to drive long distances to find great Fall subjects? They are as close as your own backyard!

More Fall images from our neighborhood coming soon!

Frozen Leaves

by Sherri on February 2, 2009

Frozen leaves, Auburn, California.

These leaves were just too pretty to not get noticed. I found them lying in a ditch in my neighborhood, during my early morning walk.

To get this color effect, I used the “Direct Positive” preset in Adobe Lightroom 2.1. I also set the “clarity” to +100 in the development module.

This photo was also shot on my Nikon D300 at ISO 6400. This was a low-light situation and I didn’t have a tripod with me. So, I decided it was another good opportunity to experiment with the higher ISO’s on the Nikon D300.

Leaf Peeping in Plumas County

Fall color on the Little Truckee River, Truckee, California.

Sometimes the best laid plans don’t pan out. That was the experience Jeff & I just had, during our fall colors trip to Plumas County last week.

If you’ve been following this Photo Blog for awhile, you have been reading about our recent Northeastern California Road Trip we took back in August. In fact, I’m still writing about it.

We fell in love with Plumas County and decided to return in October for an “Awesome Autumn” tour, which this area is known for. Unfortunately, we arrived a little too early. I did my homework. I followed the Awesome Autumn Leaf Peeper Blog for Plumas County. It was recommended to wait a week or so for “peak color,” but that wasn’t something we could do. We went anyway, but it was a huge disappointment. I really expected to see more intense color like we witnessed in Mono County on previous trips. But, that just wasn’t going to happen on this trip. As it turns out, the best color we saw during our nearly 400-mile trip was on the Little Truckee River in Sierra County (see photo above).

For anyone looking for a great “dog friendly” place to stay in Plumas County while you check out the fall colors, we highly recommend the Sierra Sky Lodge. That was the highlight of our trip!

Since the highlight of our trip was our stay at Sierra Sky Lodge, I decided to include several photos I took during our 1 night stay there.

The Sierra Sky Lodge as seen if you are coming from Quincy.

The research I did to locate this place really paid off. The owners and staff of the Sierra Sky Lodge are really friendly and helpful and the rates are very reasonable.

Cabin #1, our “dog friendly” cabin for the night.

The cabin we stayed in was cozy and rustic, just like we like them. It had a fireplace and the most comfortable bed we’ve slept in for a long time. This place actually reminded us of home. That is something we look for, when we’re not camping.

The next time we visit Plumas County and we are not camping, we will definitely return to Sierra Sky Lodge!

By the way, our dog Cocoa rates this place four out of four paws on the Paws Scale. If you don’t know about the Paws Scale, check out the California Dog Lover’s Companion Guidebook by Maria Goodavage.

Happy Leaf Peeping!

Pond and Reflections

Pond and reflections, rural Auburn, California

There are a lot of ponds in the Auburn area, but this is one of my favorites.

Many common species of birds seem to claim it as one of their favorites as well. But, every year in the spring, the pond also gets visited by a not so common bird, the Green Heron. It is a beauty of a bird that lives in this pond for weeks at a time, before moving on.

A Frosty December Morning in Rural Auburn

Photo – Horse in a rural Auburn, CA pasture

I’ve been trying to get a good shot of this horse, during my morning walks for quite sometime. On the days when the conditions were the best, I didn’t have my camera. Then, I would carry my camera and the conditions wouldn’t be good.

Finally, a couple of weeks ago, everying lined up. I brought my camera and I got there when the lighting was just right. There was also frost on the ground, which added greatly to the scene. It was worth the wait!

So much for having a White Christmas this year, according to the Weather Man! Of course, we know that they are not always right!

Photo – Abstract Aspen grove, near Bridgeport, CA

This abstract was created from the same original photograph of the Aspen grove I have been featuring over the last few weeks. I used the Spherize Distorting Filter in PhotoShop to get this effect. This doesn’t work well on all subjects, but with a little experimenting, you will find what works best.

Happy experimenting!

Although fall has pretty much done it’s thing, I’ve decided that I’m not done creating fall images! Here is a very abstract version of an Aspen grove photo I featured a few weeks back.
