Banner Cascade Trail: Nevada City, CA

by Sherri on October 25, 2010

Banner-Cascade-Trail

Sherri Meyer & Cocoa hiking on the Banner Cascade Trail in Nevada City, California.

Our fall color scouting trip to Nevada City last Thursday didn’t yield quite what we were expecting. We went to check on the fall color for my upcoming Photo Tour & Workshop. It was scheduled for yesterday. It’s a good thing I postponed it due to the lack of color, as this area got dumped on yesterday (6.5 inches of rain at our house)!

According to what I had been reading, the trees were starting to turn a couple of weeks ago. We expected it to look like it did in this photo of Downtown Nevada City, which was taken two years ago almost to the day!

The best laid plans don’t always work out. We made the most of the day anyway. We found a great hiking trail, the “Banner Cascade Trail.” It parallels a four and one-half mile segment of the Lower Cascade Canal between Red Dog Road and Gracie Road, near Nevada City. It is level and great for hiking, biking and running. Leashed dogs are welcome too!

We only had enough time to hike two miles and capture a few Outdoor Lifestyle images, before turning around. The four mile hike was time well spent! :-)

NOTE: There is still time to book my half-day Old Town Auburn Fall Color Photo Tour & Workshop, or my full day American River & Old Town Auburn Fall Color Photo Tour & Workshop. We should have some really great color by then!

Cheers,

Sherri

Amgen Tour of California is Coming to Auburn!

by Sherri on February 17, 2010

Foresthill-Bridge-7

Close up shot of the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge taken this past December. You are looking towards North Auburn. This image was processed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & CS3.

WOW – this is BIG news! The largest cycling event in America, the Amgen Tour of California is coming to Auburn this May. A route through Old Town Auburn, Downtown Auburn and along the Foresthill Bridge (California’s tallest bridge) has been decided on, as part of the first leg of the race. This leg starts in the Gold Rush town of Nevada City and ends in Sacramento, our state Capitol.

If you will be up in this area for the race, there is a lot to see and do here. For starters, be sure to set aside some time for exploring Nevada City, one of the most charming of all California Gold Rush towns. Then, there is my town of Auburn. There is a lot to see and do here too.

For a few ideas on how to spend your time while visiting Auburn, you can refer to my Auburn Category on the sidebar of this Photo Blog, or the Auburn Photos on our Website. Locals, you may even get some ideas of things to do in “your own backyard!”

Thank you for visiting. Note: If you have any questions about the Auburn area, please feel free to add them in the comments section below.

Photo # 1 - Hiker viewing one of several waterfalls on Canyon Creek, near Lake Faucherie, Tahoe National Forest, California.

Can you guess what I did to photo #2 (below) in Lightroom to achieve the results you see in #1? This week I’m doing something a little different with my Monday Makeover. Instead of telling you what I did, I am curious to see if you can guess what I did. I will let the cat out of the bag, after I get a few responses.

Photo Update – the cat is out of the bag! (July 10th)

Thanks to all of you that gave your best shot at guessing what I did during this photo makeover. I won’t make you wait a minute longer. I am now letting the cat out of the bag. Here is what I did to the original photo in Lightroom 2.

  1. Set White Balance to daylight.
  2. Set the Fill Light to +40.
  3. Set the Clarity to +100.
  4. Set the Vibrance to +70.

That’s it folks. Thanks again for your participation and for your patience!

Flying A Service Station

by Sherri on May 19, 2009

Flying A Service Station, Truckee, California.

Do you remember the Flying A Service Station’s? If you do, you are giving your age away.

This is the one subject that stood out from the rest, while visiting Truckee recently. It was really fun to photograph. I took a whole series of photos of it and these were two of my favorites.

A closer up view of the pump reveals that premium gas was going for 27 cents per gallon. Imagine that!

Old Town Truckee, California

by Sherri on May 14, 2009

Digital Art photo of Old Town Truckee, California.

Truckee is perhaps one of the most charming and popular mountain towns in California. It is close to Lake Tahoe and offers year-round recreational opportunities.

We stayed in Truckee at the “dog friendly” Inn at Truckee, during our recent road trip. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting the area with your pooch. It is very reasonable, has a spa and hot tub and even includes continental breakfast. It is also close to Old Town, which is one of the areas I was photographing during our stay in Truckee. Our dog, Cocoa, gives it 3 paws out of 4, based on the rating system in the California Dog Lover’s Companion Guide Book.

About the photo:

I used my favorite creative filter in PhotoShop CS3 “Poster Edges” to achieve this look.

Happy New Year!

by Sherri on December 31, 2008

Cross Country Skiing off of highway 20, Nevada County, California.

Happy New Year Everyone!

It’s hard to believe another year has blown by. When I was growing up my Mother always told me “The older you get the faster the years go by.” She was right!

This photo was taken a couple of years ago. We have only been skiing once since that time. That was last year. Two of the things I want to do more of this year is to ski and snowshoe. I remember saying the same thing last year. It’s a good thing the one day we did ski last year was one of the best EVER!

Other things on the list for 2009 are to do a winter paddle on nearby Lake Clementine, get more regular with my Yoga workouts and playing the guitar. Then there is that one thing that lands on nearly everyone’s list; losing weight. This by no means is a complete list. But, these are definitely some of the most important ones on my list. I hope I’m not writing this same list a year from now!

What is on your list for 2009?

Blue Lake Sunset

by Sherri on May 9, 2008

Sunset over Blue Lake, Tahoe National Forest, California

Here is another shot of Blue Lake taken from the ridge, overlooking the lake. This version is the way it actually looked when I shot it.

 blue-lake3.jpg

For this version of the photo above, I did a little adjusting in PhotoShop to bring out the blue tones. After all, the name of the lake is “Blue Lake!”

Silhouette of a couple canoeing on Blue Lake, Tahoe National Forest, California

There are several Blue Lakes in California. But, the one in the photo above has been a favorite of ours for many years. In fact, we have kept it a “secret” up until now. I won’t tell exactly how to get there, other than it’s the Blue Lake near Lake Spaulding, in the Tahoe National Forest.
