Sherri & Sierra canoeing on Gold Lake in Sierra County, California. This image was developed using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
A few days ago, I ran a little contest. The first person to leave 5 comments on this Photo Blog would win a “FREE” 8×12 print of their choice. I had never done anything like this before, so I didn’t know quite what to expect.
Within a few minutes, 3 of my facebook Fans had participated in my little challenge. The winner, Erin Gonzalez, selected this photo of my dog Sierra & I canoeing on Gold Lake in Sierra County, California.
I am planning to do this again soon. If you would like a chance at winning a “FREE” photo, you will need to become a Fan of Sherri Meyer Photography. As a Fan, you will be able to participate in challenges such as this, take advantage of our specials and more.
Thank you for visiting!

Man and son fishing on Gold Lake, Sierra County, California
I have been going through our collection of slides lately, many which have not been added to our on-line galleries yet. I came across this image and decided to post it as the photo of the day.
When I took this photograph, I didn’t know who the man and his son were and still don’t. Since that day, this image landed on the cover of Tom Stienstra’s California Fishing Guidebook. I figured they would eventually stumble upon it in a bookstore, or perhaps someone they know might.
It never happened.
Now, they would have to stumble upon it in a library, as there has been a couple revisions of this book since then. Or maybe they will see it on this Blog.
Here is what this photo looks like as a cover.

Photo – Downtown Sierraville, Sierra County, CA
This was our final destination for the day. We met our friends Leslie and Mark Alire at their new bar, Sid’s Place, the building in the right of this photo. We were unable to make their grand opening party the night before, so we ventured up to this tiny Gold Country town to visit them the next day after our hike. I guess we missed a great bash, but this way we were able to spend more quality time with them.
If you are looking for new experiences, stop in at Sid’s Place in Sierraville, CA for a cold beer, or a glass of wine and try your luck at a game of pool.

There are also a few eateries in town. I haven’t personally tried any of them, but I hear the Mexican Restaurant is a good pick. If anyone out there can give me feedback on other good places to eat in Sierraville, please leave a comment on this blog and I will add it to my photo essay. You do not have to register or login to leave a comment.

Photo – A rural scene in Sierraville, Sierra County, CA
One of the things that is so attractive about Sierraville is it’s location. I love wide open spaces and this town certainly fits that description. It is situated in the middle of a vast valley, mostly consisting of ranchland and surrounded by mountains and National Forest.
Another great thing about Sierraville’s location is it’s close proximity to many great recreational opportunies. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing to name just a few can be enjoyed nearby. And if you enjoy a good soak in a hot spring, check out Sierra Hot Springs, which is just a few minutes away also.

Photo – Jeff and Cocoa hiking the Aspen lined Sagehen Creek Trail, near Truckee, CA
We didn’t quite make it to the end of the trail. We spent too much time photographing in this one beautiful meadow and we had plans to meet our friends later on in Sierraville. A couple of hikers that passed by, highly recommended that we keep going, as the Salmon were spawning near where Sagehen Creek and Stampede Reservoir meet. That was only about another half-mile further. I guess we will have to return, as we were also a couple weeks early for peak fall colors!

Cocoa gets one more chance to catch a fish on our return hike. One of her favorite things to do when we are near water is to fish. If we are staying in one place for several hours, she will spend most of the time along the shoreline fishing for minnows. She is so easily entertained!

Photo – A pan shot of Sherri and Cocoa running on the Sagehen Creek Trail, near Truckee, CA
I was also hoping to photograph someone running with their dog/s on this trail during our hike last Sunday. That didn’t “pan out.” So, it was my turn to be the model for these shots. The Sagehen Creek Trail is a perfect running trail, as well as a hiking trail. It follows Sagehen Creek, winds through Aspen groves and pines and eventually ends up at Stampede Reservoir.
And best of all, it is a “dog friendly” trail!

Our dog, Cocoa, decided to round out the color mix a bit for this shot. Kris has to be getting low on treats by now!

I love the way they all line up by color! I’ve always heard dogs were color blind, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe they lined up by breed rather than by color.

Photo – Kris with her dogs Kirby, Trigger, Rovetta & Simba on the Sagehen Creek Trail, near Truckee, CA
This past Sunday, I went on a wonderful day trip with my husband, Jeff and our dog, Cocoa. First on our list was to hike the beautiful 5-mile ”Dog Friendly” Sagehen Creek Trail. It starts on highway 89, just a few miles out of Truckee and ends up at Stampede Reservoir.
One of my favorite subjects to photograph is of people interacting with their dogs. We had been on this trail before, so I knew there would be people hiking with their dogs. But, I didn’t expect to meet Kris and her 4 extremely “well behaved” and “photogenic” dogs! She was hiking the trail with her 3 Golden Retreivers and 1 Irish Setter, which she adopted through Nor Cal. We thought we had our hands full with just one dog!
I will post more photos from our day trip to Sierra County soon.
