Abstract Aspens

by Sherri on November 1, 2011

"Abstract Aspens" along scenic Highway 395, Eastern Sierra, California.

A couple of weeks ago, my husband, our dog and I did a Eastern Sierra Road Trip. We had a long list of places to go and things to shoot for our stock photo files and fine art collection. As always, we didn’t make it to every place on the list, nor did we shoot everything we wanted to shoot. Here is one of the images we captured that has already been uploaded to our Website.

Abstract Aspens (as well as all of our other images) can be ordered as Prints, Greeting Cards or Personal Use Downloads. Before ordering, be sure to check out our Discount Coupon Specials.

I also teach Abstract Photo Workshops. If you would like to be notified of my upcoming Abstract Photo Workshops, I recommend signing up for our Photo Newsletter. I will be sending the November issue out soon!

Cheers,

Sherri

Gold Lake Abstract - Sierra County, Northern California.

I don’t usually post more than 1 photo in a blog post, but I wanted to show these 3 together because they were all taken at the same place and they are all “Water Abstracts!”

Abstracts are so fun to create and I love to teach others how to create them too! I’ve got an Abstract Photo Workshop comin’ up really soon here in Auburn. Come join in on the fun!

See Abstract Photo Workshops for more information and to register!

Hope to see you there!

Woman mountain biking on the Stagecoach Trail in Auburn, California the "Endurance Capital of the World."

If you are into shooting action as I am, Auburn is a great place to do it. They don’t call us the “Endurance Capital of the World” for nothing. People travel from all over the world to participate in several annual events held here each year, as we have some of the best multi-use trails in the country. Auburn is no longer just a stopping off point in route to Lake Tahoe and Reno. It is becoming a travel destination in it’s own right!

I was on the hunt for mountain bikers the day I shot this photo, while hiking on the Stagecoach Trail. As a local, I know where the hot spots are for action. I was standing on top of a picnic table near the trails edge, ready for my first victim to come flying down the hill. I don’t think she ever saw me, she was going so fast!

Because I was so close to the trail, I had to use my 28-7o mm zoom lens; not the 80-200 mm zoom lens I normally use for panning photographs. Back then, I was shooting with the Nikon D70, so the lowest ISO I could use was 200. My shutter speed was set at 1/30 sec. and my aperture was f 16.

Panning is one of the techniques I use a lot when shooting action. If you would like to learn how to shoot action and adventure, I will be leading a Action & Adventure Photo Workshop nearby on May 1st. I’d love to have you join me. For information and to register, please click on the previous link.

SPECIAL – You can also organize your own group of 5-8 and one person gets to attend for FREE!

Comments or questions are always welcome!

Cheers,

Sherri

“Blue Ice”

by Sherri on February 28, 2011

A patch of ice, along the road in our neighborhood.

Abstracts can be made anywhere. This one was created the day after we had a low snowfall here in Auburn, California. It was 30 degrees outside. I knew there would be icy patches along the road during my morning walk, if I got out early enough. I really didn’t want to brave the cold, but I knew it would pay off if I did!

I welcome your questions or comments any old time.

Cheers,

Sherri

Lake Almanor Abstract

by Sherri on November 2, 2010

Lake Almanor Abstract

This was taken at one of the boat launch areas at Lake Almanor, Plumas County, CA.

Abstract photos are really fun to create. When I captured this one, I was down at the boat launch at Lake Almanor during sunset, for a sailing photo shoot. I glanced down at the water and the sunlight was striking this beautiful underwater pattern. I couldn’t resist capturing it.

If you haven’t created abstracts before, give it a shot. Look close at your subjects and you can usually find an abstract! Take a look at a tree trunk, the ground, the sky, even someones clothing up close can render a nice abstract.

Have a nice example you would like to share? Feel free to post a link to it in the comments section below.

Have fun!

Summit Lake Reflections

by Sherri on October 5, 2010

Summit-Lake

Summit Lake Reflections - Sierra County, California.

This image of trees reflecting in Summit Lake is not very original. I see this type of image quite often actually, but I love them! When we (Big Jeff, Little Jeff and I) arrived at Summit Lake during a hike, I saw this scene in the water and decided to go for it. I captured a few, but this one stood out from the rest. What I didn’t like about it though was that the image was too green. I wanted the blue to stand out more.

In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, I beefed up the blue. I also added some fill light. I think it’s a “keeper” now! What do you think?

Thanks for visiting!

Cheers, Sherri

Top 10 Lightroom Tweets of the Week

Death-Valley-Nature-Abstract

Death Valley Nature Abstract – One of my favorite subjects to photograph when I’m not photographing people is nature close-ups. While Jeff & I were exploring Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley National Park a couple years ago, I spotted this “Face in the desert.” I wasn’t leaving until I got a photo of it I was happy with. Of course, the original didn’t look this good. Using the amazing Adobe PhotoShop Lightroom 2 Photo Management Software, I was able to achieve the results you see here.

Do you see what I see? I see a face with one eye open and one eye closed. There is even a mouth. The nose is pretty deformed. I’d love to hear your opinions about this photo. [click to continue…]
