A cold, lonely horse in a pasture in our rural Auburn, California neighborhood. This photo was captured during the "Big Sierra Snowstorm" last week.
You must be thinking what a silly title for a post. I agree. I had a hard time coming up with one. In fact, I nearly asked for help. Then, I had one of those “ah ha moments” and decided to call it “Cold Tone Horse,” because that is the treatment I gave this image when I developed it in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.
The original image lacked something for me and I wanted to do something different. Since this horse appeared to be cold, I decided to add to the cold look by using the Preset “Cold Tone” in Lightroom.
I have 2 questions for you:
- Can you figure out what other 2 creative techniques I used in Photoshop CS3 to create this image?
- Does it work for you?

Lone duck at Ashford Park, Auburn, California
Every time Jeff, Cocoa (our dog) and I go to the Ashley Memorial Dog Park, we can’t help but notice the lone resident duck, at nearby Ashford Park.
When he is not being fed by visitors of the park, you can usually find him on his own private island.

Jeff & Cocoa, Ashford Park, Auburn, California
Ashford Park is located in front of the Ashley Memorial Dog Park, on Auburn Ravine Road. It has a nice lawn area, picnic tables, BBQ’s, playground, seasonal creek, pond, one lone duck and an area you can rent for parties, for a very nominal fee.
After we spend an hour or so at the dog park, we like to visit this spot. During the late afternoon, the light here is what photographer’s refer to as “golden light,” or “sweet light.”
It’s the perfect time to capture a few “lifestyle” images of Jeff and Cocoa that will be added to our Lifestyles Stock Photo Gallery.

Doggone good times at Ashley Memorial Dog Park, Auburn, California

Mallard Ducks at the American River Parkway, Sacramento, CA
Last weekend, Jeff and I did a photo shoot at the American River Parkway in Sacramento. Our assignment was to capture photos of bikers on the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, named the #1 bike path in the nation for 2006 by www.trails.com.
While we were scouting the area for great locations, I got a little sidetracked by these beautiful Mallards.

I love experimenting in PhotoShop. At first, I preferred the original shot. After looking at them for awhile, I have changed my mind. Now, I like the digital art version the best.

Photo – Horse in a rural Auburn, CA pasture
I’ve been trying to get a good shot of this horse, during my morning walks for quite sometime. On the days when the conditions were the best, I didn’t have my camera. Then, I would carry my camera and the conditions wouldn’t be good.
Finally, a couple of weeks ago, everying lined up. I brought my camera and I got there when the lighting was just right. There was also frost on the ground, which added greatly to the scene. It was worth the wait!
