Sherri & Cocoa out for a run in our rural Auburn, CA neighborhood.
Now that Fall has arrived here in the Sierra Foothill’s, I feel a lot more like going out for a run!
This image was taken near where we live in rural Auburn, California. Remember – great photographs can be found “Right in Your Own Backyard!”
When I developed this image in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2, I added a little fill light, increased the Clarity to 50 and the Vibrance to 70. If you are not using Lightroom, I highly recommend that you give it a try!

Woman running with her dogs across the famous “No Hands Bridge” in Auburn, California.
I chose to feature this photo in my “Wednesday’s WOW” post for a couple of reasons.
First of all, I really like it and secondly the annual Western States 100 Endurance Run is coming up June 27-28. If you have never heard of this race, it is a 100-mile foot race which starts in Squaw Valley, California and winds up in Auburn, California 100-miles later. The participants of this race will cross No Hands Bridge minutes before reaching the finish line at Placer High School. NOTE: This bridge is in both El Dorado and Placer counties. Cocoa watching the coyotes from our bedroom window. This photo was shot at ISO 3200, 1/800 sec, f 2.8 on a Nikon D300.
I’ve been going through my backlog of images editing, reorganizing and looking for a photo to use in today’s post. I was looking at a series of our dog, Cocoa, watching four coyotes from our bedroom window. I had to choose one out of the bunch and this one stuck out from the rest.
Why? That’s what I had to ask myself. They were all very similar. There were several that were perhaps as good as this one in some ways, but seem to be missing something. After analyzing them all, I chose this one because “the eyes have it!” I realized the eyes were truly the most important aspect of this story telling photo. This one was clearly the winner!

Jeff & Cocoa walking in our neighborhood during a low snowfall, Auburn, CA
Well, we didn’t get the “White Christmas” we were hoping for. But, we have had a couple of low snowfalls recently. Unfortunately, the snow didn’t stick either time.
We still have a lot of winter ahead of us. We could still get a snowfall like you see in the photo in my “Merry Christmas” post.

Cocoa fishing at the American River, Weimar, California
When I was photographing this close up shot of the river, Cocoa walked into my frame. She and a guy jumping off of the bridge are making the ripples in the water.

Jeff & Cocoa (Dirt Road Dawg) heading out for an afternoon paddle, at Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park.
Poor Jeff. He usually has the dog in his kayak, because I usually have the camera in mine. The 2 don’t mix, as you have probably figured out.
We paddled out to the first campsite to check it out. We got a late start and we had a dog with us, which slows us down. So, the first campsite was as far as we were gonna get that day. That was okay. It was a scouting trip after all!
We hung out there for 3-4 hours waiting for the light to get better for photography, before paddling back to the truck.
I will post a couple more photos from our adventure next week.

Jeff and Cocoa preparing for our kayak adventure, at Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, California. Notice Mount Shasta on the left.
Most people have never heard of California’s Northeastern most State Park, Ahjumawi Lava Springs. I hadn’t heard of it either, until the name jumped out at me while reading over the California State Parks brochure. [click to continue…]

Mount Shasta, California, as viewed from the dirt road to Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park.
Jeff and I were really jazzed about finally getting to experience Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, in Northeastern Californa. It had been high on our priority list for a couple of years.
The journey getting there was just as enjoyable for us, as getting to the destination itself. That’s usually the case, whenever we travel off-the-beaten path via dirt roads, back roads, or by four wheel drive. In fact, when we are traveling on a dirt road, our dog Cocoa even gets the nickname “Dirt Road Dog,” because she prefers them too. I’m not kidding! She gets very excited as soon as the road turns to dirt, just like we do.
The scenery on the way into Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park was breathtaking. The photo above was one of our favorite scenes along the way.
Come back soon for photos of Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park!
